40–45 Mins Paragraph Writing
The Big Umbrella: Topic Sentences
Teaching 3rd graders how one strong sentence shelters all the details in a paragraph.
What 3rd Graders Will Learn
• Understand: A topic sentence is the "Umbrella" that covers every detail in the paragraph.
• Spot: Tell the difference between a Big Umbrella sentence and a single tiny raindrop detail.
• Write: Combine Who/What + The Big Idea to write a complete opening sentence.
The 3rd Grade Umbrella Formula
The Topic + The Big Idea
(Who or What) + (What you are saying about it)
Example: "Dogs (Topic) are wonderful pets for families (Big Idea)."
1. Prop Hook 6 mins
2. I Do (Model) 12 mins
3. We Do (Practice) 14 mins
4. You Do (Check) 10 mins
1 The Hook: The Real Umbrella Demonstration (6 Mins)
Materials: Umbrella + 3 Paper Raindrops
Action: Open a real umbrella in the front of the room. Hold up three paper raindrops cutouts labeled: 1. Rain boots , 2. Big muddy puddles , and 3. Jumping in puddles .
"Class, imagine all three of these raindrops are falling from the sky. What keeps them all dry together? This umbrella! In writing, your paragraph needs an umbrella too. We call it a topic sentence . It shelters all your detail raindrops!"
2 Modeling: The Umbrella Test (12 Mins)
I Do Phase
Display three student attempts about Cheetahs . Think aloud using hand motions (make an umbrella shape with your hands):
Just a Raindrop!
"Cheetahs have black spots on their fur."
Why it fails: This is only one detail ! It cannot cover their speed, their claws, or how they hunt.
The Announcement!
"I am going to tell you all about cheetahs."
Why it fails: It tells us you are talking, but gives zero Big Idea about cheetahs. Don't be a robot!
The Big Umbrella!
"Cheetahs have incredible bodies built for super speed."
Why it works: Covers flexible spines, wide claws, long tails, and speed!

3 Guided Practice: "Build the Umbrella" Game (14 Mins)
We Do Phase (Partners)
Post 3 mystery detail raindrops on the anchor chart. Ask student partners to put their heads together and build an umbrella sentence:
💧 You pick sweet apples
💧 You take hayrides with friends
💧 You drink warm apple cider
Partner Talking Prompt:
"Turn to your partner: What is the TOPIC (apple orchard)? What is the BIG IDEA (why is it great)?"
Great 3rd Grade Responses:
"Visiting an apple orchard is a fun autumn adventure." OR "There are many exciting things to do at an apple orchard."
4 Independent Practice & Quick Check (10 Mins)
You Do Phase
Pass out the Topic Sentence Builder Worksheet . Students independently identify umbrellas, pick the best sentence for honeybees, and write two original sentences.
Quick Check Routine (Last 3 Minutes)
Call out: "Umbrella check!" Students place their fingers on their favorite written sentence and whisper to a partner: "My topic is _____, and my big idea is _____." Collect worksheets for formative check.
3rd Grade Differentiation Strategies
Struggling Writers / ELL
Provide sentence frames on strips: "[Topic] is a great _____ because _____." or "There are many reasons why [Topic] is _____."
On-Grade Writers
Encourage strong descriptive adjectives (e.g., replace "good" with "thrilling," "helpful," or "delicious").
Advanced / Challenge
Challenge them to start with a time or reason word ("Even though...", "Because...", "During the summer..." ).
Common 3rd Grade Traps & How to Fix Them
Trap 1: The "I am writing about..." robot
Prompt: "Pretend you are talking to a friend. Jump right into the topic!"
Trap 2: Writing one tiny detail instead of the umbrella
Prompt: "Does that sentence cover ALL 3 clues? If not, get a bigger umbrella!"

The Big Umbrella Sentences • Answer Key
Quick scoring guide, answer explanations, exemplar 3rd-grade sentences, and teacher coaching cues.
Part 1: The Umbrella Test Solutions
1. "Soccer is an exciting sport that takes teamwork and lots of practice." ☂️ Big Umbrella
Teacher Note: Covers multiple body details (excitement, teamwork, practice). It can shelter a full paragraph!
2. "Soccer players wear shin guards to protect their legs." 💧 Tiny Raindrop
Teacher Note: This is only one small fact about soccer gear. It cannot cover rules, games, or scoring.
3. "Dogs have wet, black noses." 💧 Tiny Raindrop
Teacher Note: Pure detail. It doesn't tell us what the paragraph will show about dogs (e.g., how they play, learn tricks, or help people).
Part 2: Honeybee Paragraph Solution
Correct Answer: Option A "Honeybees work very hard together to make food for their hive."
Why A is the best umbrella: "Work very hard together to make food" covers all 3 sentences in the paragraph: gathering nectar, making honey, and feeding the queen and babies.
Why B is wrong: Only talks about flowers (one raindrop). Why C is wrong: Far too big (all bugs in the world, not honeybees).
Part 3: Exemplar Student Sentences (Writing Lines)
🔥 Topic A: Campfires
⭐ 3-Star Exemplar (Full Umbrella):
"Sitting around a campfire is one of the most fun parts of camping."

Acceptable 3rd Grade Variation:
"You can create a delicious pizza by following three easy steps."
