Sound Spellers Teacher Guide
20 Minutes
Focus: Sound-to-Letter Encoding
Target Skill
Isolate 3 phonemes in CVC words and map each phoneme to its correct grapheme.
UFLI Lessons 1–15 Scope
Vowels: a, i, o
Consonants: m, s, t, p, f, n, c, d, h
Materials Needed
Sound Box Worksheets, dry-erase pockets, markers, chips/counters, Sound Bridge charts.
The Encoding Bottleneck: Why Sounding Out Doesn't Turn Into Writing
Kindergarteners often orally segment sounds (/m/... /a/... /t/), but cognitive load drops the memory before they can retrieve the grapheme motor plan. This routine uses physical sound boxes to hold each sound in place so working memory stays focused on one letter at a time.
20-Minute Instructional Sequence
1 Warm-Up: Oral Segmentation & Finger Tap (3 min) 0:00 – 3:00
Teacher Script: "Eyes on me! We are sound detectives. When I say a word, we stretch it and tap our fingers for each sound. Ready? The word is map. Repeat: map. Let's tap: /m/ (thumb), /ă/ (pointer), /p/ (middle). How many sounds? Three!"
Quick drill with 4 words: sam, fit, top, fan . No writing yet—ear and hand connection only.
2 Model: Say It, Tap It, Map It, Write It (4 min) 3:00 – 7:00
1. SAY IT "Say the word naturally."
2. TAP IT "Tap 1 finger per sound."
3. MAP IT "Push a chip into box."
4. WRITE IT "Write letter in box."
Teacher Model (Word: mat): "Watch me. 1) Word is mat. 2) Tap: /m/ - /ă/ - /t/. 3) Push chips: green, yellow, red into boxes. 4) First box is /m/. What letter makes /m/? Letter 'm'. I write 'm'. Middle box is /ă/. Letter 'a'. Last box is /t/. Letter 't'. Now read it: m-a-t, mat!"
3 Guided Small Group Practice with Immediate Feedback (8 min) 7:00 – 15:00
Students work on Sound Box Worksheet. Teacher dictates one word at a time. Every student pushes chips, whispers sounds, and writes. Teacher delivers immediate verbal & tactile feedback before moving to the next word. (Details on Page 2).

Stumble Observed Exact Teacher Coaching Script Scaffold Support Vowel Drop Writes "pt" for "pot" "You have the first and last sound! Touch the middle box. Say the word slow: /p/ ... /ŏ/ ... /t/. What mouth shape do you make in the middle?" Have student look at teacher mouth or Sound Bridge chart for /ŏ/ (octopus/open). Sound-Symbol Freeze Says /p/ correctly but can't recall letter "Say the sound: /p/. Look at your Sound Bridge. Find the picture of the pan. What letter is next to pan? Yes, 'p'!" Point directly to the keyword picture rather than giving the letter name. Reversal / Confusion Confuses d/b or writes p upside down "For 'd', remember our formation song: First make the 'c' curve, go straight up tall, then pull down. Try it in the air first!" Use finger-tracing on the textured desk card before writing with marker. Segmentation Rush Writes first letter, guesses rest "Freeze pencil! Put your finger in box 1. What's the sound? Good. Now move finger to box 2. What sound lives here?" One-box-at-a-time rule. Student must tap the box before placing pencil down.

How to make letter 'd' (duck): Start with a cookie bite 'c' curve, pull up straight like a tall giraffe neck, and drop back down. Never start with the stick!
How to make letter 'p' (pan): Start at the middle dotted line, drop swimming down into the basement, then climb up and wrap around into a circle!
