SOUND SLEUTHS
Cracking the Code of Consonants, Vowels & Spelling Patterns
Our Mission
I can identify vowels and consonants and use phonics patterns to decode unfamiliar words.
Essential Question
How do letters and spelling patterns work together to unlock new words?
Warm-Up Activity
Vowels vs. Consonants
Step 1 of 5
V
Vowel Letters
Open-mouth sounds where air flows freely:
A E I O U
⭐ Golden Rule: Every syllable must have a vowel sound!
C
Consonant Letters
Sounds created by lips, tongue, or teeth blocking air:
B • C • D • F • G • H • J • K • L • M • N • P • Q • R • S • T • V • W • X • Y • Z
⭐ 21 letters that frame and build word syllables!
Quick Detective Check: Spot the vowels & consonants in:
sun ship train
Pattern 01
CVC Words: Short Vowel Sounds
Consonant + Vowel + Consonant
C + V + C
The vowel is trapped in the middle! It says its SHORT sound.
cat
Short /a/
k - æ - t
bed
Short /e/
b - ɛ - d
sit
Short /i/
s - ɪ - t
hot
Short /o/
h - ɑ - t
cup
Short /u/
k - ʌ - p
Decoding Strategy: Look at the letters ➔ Say each sound ➔ Blend together into the word!
Pattern 02
Closed Syllables: Shutting the Door!
Syllable Division
The Closed Door Secret
A closed syllable ends with one or more consonants. The ending consonant acts like a closed door that keeps the vowel short!
napkin 2 Syllables
nap Closed (Short /a/)
/
kin Closed (Short /i/)
picnic 2 Syllables
pic Closed (Short /i/)
/
nic Closed (Short /i/)
Syllable Division Rule: When two consonants stand between vowels (VC/CV), divide between the consonants!
Pattern 03
Blends vs. Digraphs
Consonant Pairs
Blends
2 Sounds Kept!
Two consonants next to each other, but you hear both individual sounds blended fast.
stop /s/ + /t/
flag /f/ + /l/
grin /g/ + /r/
Digraphs
1 Brand New Sound!
Two consonants team up to make ONE single, unique sound.
sh
/ʃ/ in ship
ch
/tʃ/ in chin
th
/θ/ in thumb
wh
/w/ in wheel
Detective Test: Can you hear two letters? It's a Blend. Only one sound? It's a Digraph!
Pattern 04
Silent E: The Vowel Power-Up!
Vowel - Consonant - E (VCE)
The silent final 'e' reaches back over one consonant to make the first vowel say its LONG NAME!
c a p Short /a/
⬇ Magic E ⬇
c a p e Long /ā/ ("ay")
k i t Short /i/
⬇ Magic E ⬇
k i t e Long /ī/ ("eye")
h o p Short /o/
⬇ Magic E ⬇
h o p e Long /ō/ ("oh")
Detective Clue: The final 'e' never makes a sound itself—its job is to power up the first vowel!
Pattern 05
Vowel Teams: Teaming Up!
Two Vowels Working Together
When two vowels team up side by side, they make ONE vowel sound (often the long sound of the first letter)!
Team AI
train
Long /ā/ sound
Team EA
beach
Long /ē/ sound
Team OA
float
Long /ō/ sound
Team IGH
bright
Long /ī/ sound
Detective Think-Aloud: "I see 'ai' in train. That's a vowel team making one long /ā/ sound!"
Pattern 06
Bossy R: Taking Over!
R-Controlled Vowels
When the letter R follows a vowel, it takes control! The vowel is neither short nor long—it makes a brand-new bossy sound.
/ar/ Sound
car
Opens wide: /ɑːr/
sharp • star • barn
/or/ Sound
storm
Rounded lips: /ɔːr/
fork • horn • corn
/er/ Sound
bird
Three spellings: /ɜːr/
bird • fern • fur
Watch Out: Bossy R completely changes the vowel sound. Never read them separately!

Word Decoder
The Golden Vowel Rule Vowels: A, E, I, O, U
Short Vowels (Fast Sound): ă (cat), ĕ (bed), ĭ (sit), ŏ (hot), ŭ (cup)
Long Vowels (Say Their Name!): ā (cape), ē (beach), ī (kite), ō (hope), ū (cube)
1 CVC Short Vowels Consonant-Vowel-Consonant
When a single vowel is locked between consonants, it makes its short sound.
cat • bed • sit • hot • cup
2 Closed Syllables The Closed Door
A consonant "shuts the door" on the vowel. Divide between consonants (VC/CV)!
nap/kin • pic/nic • sun/set
3 Blends vs. Digraphs Consonant Teams
Blends keep 2 sounds (stop, flag). Digraphs make 1 new sound (sh, ch, th, wh).
stop • flag | ship • chin • thumb
4 Silent E / Magic E Vowel Power-Up
Final e stays silent and reaches back to make the first vowel say its long name.
cap ➔ cape • kit ➔ kite • hop ➔ hope
5 Vowel Teams Two Vowels Walking
Two vowels work together to make one long vowel sound (usually the first vowel).
train (ā) • beach (ē) • float (ō) • bright (ī)
6 Bossy R (R-Controlled) R Takes Charge
When R follows a vowel, it steals the show! The vowel is neither short nor long.
car (/ar/) • storm (/or/) • bird (/er/)
The 4-Step Detective Strategy for Reading Tricky Words:
Step 1: Spot Find the vowel letters first
Step 2: Inspect Look for magic e, teams, or bossy R
Step 3: Chunk Break between consonants if 2 syllables
Step 4: Blend Say each part, blend, and check sense!
Family Reading Tip:
When your child encounters an unfamiliar word while reading at home, ask: "What vowel pattern do you see?" or "Does this have a silent e or a bossy R?"
