Warm-Up: What's Important?
"If you were telling a friend about your favorite animal, what are the most important things you'd tell them? What details might be fun, but not necessary to know what kind of animal it is?"

Explain that they will read a silly winter story and decide which details are essential for the story to make sense vs. just for fun.

Read Aloud
Read "The Day My Snowman Wore Underpants" aloud. Encourage the student to follow along. Ask: "What was the funniest part?"

The Day My Snowman Wore Underpants
It was the coldest winter ever! Fluffy, white snow piled up outside Leo's window like giant marshmallows. Leo, a super creative second grader (who really loved marshmallows), decided to build the most amazing snowman in the history of his backyard.
First, he rolled a giant ball for the bottom. It was so big, it almost got stuck in the rose bushes! (Luckily, the roses were asleep for winter.) Then, he added a medium-sized ball for the middle and a smaller one for the head.
"Hmm," Leo thought, scratching his chin, which was a little sticky from the marshmallow he'd just eaten. "He needs something special."
He gave his snowman a carrot nose, twig arms, and two sparkly buttons for eyes. For a hat, he used his dad's old, slightly-too-small fishing hat. It had a fake fish dangling from it! The snowman looked quite dapper, if a bit fishy.
But the most important detail, the one that made Leo giggle so much he almost fell over, was when he found his little brother's bright red, superhero-themed underwear. "Perfect!" he declared, carefully pulling them onto the snowman's middle section.
His snowman, now named Captain Chilly-Cheeks, stood proudly in the yard, rocking bright red underpants. A blue jay landed on Captain Chilly-Cheeks' fishing hat and chirped, probably wondering why a snowman needed underwear. Leo knew why – because it was hilarious! And that’s how Captain Chilly-Cheeks spent the winter, making everyone who saw him smile, even if they were a little confused.
