1. Beginning (Setting & Hook)
Pip the squirrel wakes up hungry in Oak Hollow. His prized shiny golden acorn has rolled out of his hollow branch!
2. Middle (Problem & Actions)
Pip tracks footprints across Bramble Brook, leaps over mossy rocks, and asks Barnaby Bear for clues along the winding path.
3. End (Resolution & Joy)
Pip spots the acorn resting by Bluejay's nest. Bluejay happily shares it, and they enjoy a grand forest picnic together.
1 Hook & The Story Mountain Metaphor 8 Minutes
Introduce the Traffic Light Trail concept: Green (Beginning) gets us started with who and where; Yellow (Middle) slows down for the big challenge and search; Red (End) brings us to a joyful stop where the mystery is solved. Have students physically practice the hand signals for Green (start engine), Yellow (look around through binoculars), and Red (two hands together at rest).
2 Interactive Read-Aloud & Modeling 14 Minutes
Read aloud with dramatic pacing. Pause at transition checkpoints to model explicit think-aloud metacognition:
Teacher Model: "Pip just realized his acorn is gone! This is our Beginning—it tells us our main character and the quest ahead."
Check for Understanding: "Show me your binoculars! What obstacle does Pip face in the Middle to solve this?"

3 Guided Picture Card Sequencing 12 Minutes
Distribute card packs to student pairs. Partners inspect 4-6 picture cards, debate the chronology using evidence from the illustrations, and physically arrange them along the 3-section Story Mountain board. Prompt pairs: "How do we know Pip met Barnaby Bear before finding Bluejay? What clues are in the footprints?"
4 Peer-to-Peer Oral Retelling Routine 12 Minutes
Partner A: Storyteller
Uses the Story Map to point and narrate: "First, Pip... Next, he searched... Finally, they..."
Partner B: Story Coach
Listens with coaching card, checks off steps, and asks prompt: "What did Pip do when he hit the brook?"
Partners swap roles after 5 minutes so every student practices oral production.
Tiered Differentiation Paths
Support (Emergent)
Provide 3 pre-sorted picture cards. Use picture-assisted sentence strips with cloze sentence starters.
On Level (Target)
Sequence all 4-6 cards independently, retelling with transition words (First, Then, Next, Finally).
