Teacher Script & Common Misconceptions:
Why the "d"? Explain that English words rarely end in a raw "j". After a single short vowel, the letter d acts like a wall or shield protecting the vowel from the magic e at the end, keeping it short.
Magic 'e' connection: In words like cage and huge , the final silent e does double duty: it makes the vowel say its long sound AND makes the g say /j/.
Check after consonants: Point out words like hinge and large . The consonant already separates the vowel from the g , so no d is needed!
