Small Moment Storybuilders
Minilesson: 45-50 Min
Objective
Students will select one narrow "seed" moment from an everyday experience, sketch it in 3 sequential steps, and add phonetic labels.
Standards

Materials
Storybuilder Slide Deck, Student Sketch Planners, writing pencils, colored pencils, mentor chart: "Watermelon vs. Seed".

Connection (3 min): Hook & The Watermelon Metaphor
Gather writers on the rug. Hold up a picture of a giant watermelon slice and a tiny seed. "Writers, when we say 'I went to the beach,' that is a giant watermelon story! It is huge and too big to tell in one sitting. Today we are hunting for the tiny SEED inside: the exact moment you found a shiny blue seashell and shouted to your grandma!"

Teach & Model (5 min): The 3-Finger Story Retell
Model thinking aloud: "My big watermelon was 'Recess.' Let's zoom in! My tiny seed: losing my red sneaker on the swings." Use the 3-Finger Story technique on the chart:
Beginning Pumping high on swing
Middle Shoe flies off! "Whoa!"
End Hopping on one foot to get it
Live-sketch quick stick figures and demonstrate sound-stretching: "Shoe... /sh/ /oo/! High... /h/ /ī/!" Emphasize kid-spelling over adult perfection.

Active Engagement (4 min): Turn & Story-Tell
Partners sit knee-to-knee. Partner A holds up 3 fingers and touches each finger as they tell a 1-minute seed moment from yesterday. Partner B checks: "Is that a giant watermelon or a tiny seed?" Swap roles.

Send writers to desks: "Today and every day, when you write a true story, zoom in to one tiny seed moment. Sketch your Beginning, Middle, and End, then stretch out the sounds for labels!"

What was the ONE thing that made your heart beat fast or made you smile biggest?" Guide writer to pick 1 snapshot (e.g., eating the melting Mickey ice cream). Sketching without Sequence "Touch box 1. What happened first before that shoe flew off? What happened right after?" Use transition verbal cues: First, Next, Then, Last to order boxes. Hesitant to Spell / Freezing "Say the word like slow bubblegum. What sound hits your lips first? Write that down!" Celebrate initial consonant; encourage stretching vowel sound without fear. Fast Finisher (Done in 5 min) "Look at your characters. Can you add speech bubbles with what they shouted?" Add speech bubbles, motion lines, or sensory details (colors, weather, sounds).

Partners point to one label in each other's work and read it aloud using the sentence stem: "I noticed your seed moment was when..."
