The Great Room Tour
Using A, AN, and THE to name every room in your home!
Today's Target
“I can use nouns with the correct article to name rooms in my house.”
The Secret Rule: A or AN?
Listen carefully to the very first sound of the room!
Rule #1
A Consonant Sounds
Use A before words starting with sounds like b, k, l, b, g...
a bedroom
a kitchen
AN Vowel Sounds
Use AN before words starting with vowel sounds: a, e, i, o, u!
an attic
an office
Say it aloud! “A attic” makes your voice bump. “An attic” slides smoothly!
Rooms with Consonant Sounds
These rooms start with consonants, so we always use A!
Use “A”
a bedroom
Starts with the /b/ sound
a kitchen
Starts with the /k/ sound
a bathroom
Starts with the /b/ sound
a living room
Starts with the /l/ sound
More examples: a garage, a dining room, a basement
All Consonants!
Rooms with Vowel Sounds
These room names start with vowel sounds, so we use AN!
Use “AN”
an attic
/æ/ Short A
The room high up right beneath the roof!
an office
/ɒ/ Short O
A quiet study room with a desk and computer!
an entryway
/e/ Short E
The hall right inside where you hang your coat!
Watch out! Never say “a attic”. Always say “an attic”!
When Do We Say “THE”?
Use THE when you mean one specific, exact room in your house!
Rule #2
General Room (Any Room)
“a kitchen”
You are talking about any kitchen in the world.
“Every house has a kitchen.”
Specific Room (Our Room!)
“the kitchen”
Both you and your listener know which exact room you mean!
“Mom is making lunch in the kitchen!”
In daily conversation at home, we usually say: “I am in the living room” or “Go to the bathroom!”
