Guidelines for Citing & Punctuating a Direct Quote

5 Core Citation Rules at a Glance

Double Quotes
Place double quotes (“ ”) around the exact author words.
“quote text”

Intro Comma
Use a comma to separate your introductory tag from the quote.
He writes, “...”

Single Quotes
Use single quotes (‘ ’) for dialogue already inside the quote.
“‘Stop!’ he yelled”

Keep ? and !
Only keep quote end marks if they are ? or !. No periods inside!
“Run now!” (Ch, 3).

Parentheses
Cite chapter title and paragraph at end. Period goes outside.
(Title, 19).
Remember: The final period always seals the whole sentence after the closing parenthesis!

Standard Direct Quote
Example from Boy: Tales of Childhood
The Tonsil Tickler “tasted and smelled very strongly of chloroform” (The bicycle and the sweet-shop, 19).
Double Quotation Marks
Open quotes right before the first borrowed word; close them right after the last borrowed word.
“tasted and smelled very strongly of chloroform”
Parenthetical Citation
Format: (Chapter title, paragraph number). Place one space before the parenthesis.
(The bicycle and the sweet-shop, 19).
Notice: There is NO period inside the quotation marks before the closing parenthesis.

When Thwaites explains that Tonsil Ticklers are made of chloroform, the boys ask, “‘but why sell them to children?’” because it seems strange to them that adults would want to harm children (The bicycle and the sweet-shop, 23).
Signal Tag Comma
Add a comma after your introductory verb before opening your quote:
...the boys ask, “...”
Single Quotes
Wrap spoken dialogue inside your direct quote with single quotation marks:
“‘...’”
End Marks (? & !)
Keep question marks or exclamation points inside quotes. Omit standard periods!

5 Citation matches (Chapter, paragraph). with period outside
Common Mistake Alert
“...chloroform.” (Chapter 1, 12)
“...chloroform” (Chapter 1, 12).
Do not drop a period inside the quotes when a citation follows! The period seals the citation.
