The Structural Concept: Why "Paragraph Builders"?
Many middle school writers view paragraphing as an arbitrary requirement. By treating sentences as physical building materials (foundation, beams, anchors), students develop a spatial and tactile awareness of argument architecture. They realize that paragraphs fail when reasoning is missing or when evidence sits in the wrong position.
Common Misconceptions
"Evidence speaks for itself": Students often drop quotes without tying them back to the claim. This workshop visually isolates Reasoning (R) to highlight where links must be built.
Scaffolding Adaptations
Struggling Writers: Provide pre-arranged color blocks where they match strips. Advanced Writers: Challenge them to write multiple competing reasoning strips and select the strongest.

Phase 2: Blueprints (15 Mins)
Show a structurally flawed paragraph on slide 4. Instruct students to identify why the paragraph collapses (e.g., transitions missing, evidence floating without support). Hand out scissors, glue sticks, and Paragraph Builders Activity Strips .

Phase 3: Construction & Inspection (20 Mins)
In pairs, students sort, color-code, and sequence strips to construct three coherent paragraphs. Encourage debate: Which evidence fits best under which claim? Does this reasoning explain the evidence? Have students paste successful mockups onto the Paragraph Blueprint Worksheet .

Phase 4: Inspection Debrief (10 Mins)
Engage the class in a "Structural Integrity Audit" (discussion prompts below). Highlight how swapping the order of reasoning and evidence can alter the paragraph's overall impact.
Structural Integrity Discussion Starters
"What happens to the structure if we remove the Reasoning (R) but keep the Claim and Evidence?" Answer: The reader has the data but doesn't know why it matters. The paragraph lacks argument.
"Can we place the Evidence (E) before the Claim (C)? When might a builder do this?" Answer: Yes, in inductive writing, but it's more challenging. Standard deductive writing establishes the foundation (C) first.
"How did the transition strips act as the joints/connectors between pieces of wood or steel?" Answer: They prevent abrupt jumps, easing the reader from one heavy component to the next.
