Paint & Play: Vowel Teams AI and AY
Standard: CCSS RF.1.3.c / RF.2.3.b (Long Vowel Teams & Spelling Generalizations)
Target Phoneme
/ā/ (Long A)
Essential Question
When do we spell /ā/ with ai versus ay?
Core Spelling Rule
ai is in the middle of a root word; ay sits at the end.
Key Materials
Slide deck, sound chips/counters, student practice sheets, highlighters.
Student Learning Objectives
Identify & Pronounce: Recognize the vowel teams ai and ay as spelling patterns that make the long /ā/ sound.
Apply Spelling Generalization: Apply the positional pattern: spell /ā/ with ai in the middle (e.g., rain, train ) and ay at the end (e.g., play, day ).
Read & Encode: Accurately decode and spell single-syllable words featuring target vowel digraphs.

2
Direct Instruction: The Positional Rule
12 Mins
Display Slide 3 & Slide 4 . Teach the positional spelling rule using visual cues:
AI = "In the Middle"
When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking! In English, words rarely end in the letter i . So when you hear /ā/ in the middle of a syllable, write ai .
Examples: r-ai -n, w-ai -t, t-r-ai -n, s-n-ai -l
AY = "At the End"
English words don't like to end in i , so the letter y steps in to help! When you hear the /ā/ sound right at the end of a base word or syllable, write ay .
Examples: p-l-ay , d-ay , s-t-ay , c-l-ay

Guided Practice: Word Mapping & Sorting
15 Mins
Interactive Choral Blending: Present Slide 5. Model tapping out sounds in sound boxes. Emphasize that ai and ay share ONE box because they form a single phoneme /ā/.
Sorting Call-and-Response Activity:
Say a word aloud. Students show an "AI Hand" (fist held in the middle of chest) if /ā/ is in the middle, or an "AY Hand" (open palm waving outward) if /ā/ is at the end.
4
Independent Application: Practice Sheet & Reading
12 Mins
Sound Box Encoding: Students map target words (tail, tray, snail, spray ) on their practice sheets.
Decodable Reading Passage: Students partner-read "A Rainy Day to Play" . They highlight all ai words in blue/purple and ay words in green/teal.
Dictation Sentence: Teacher dictates: "Kay will wait for the train in the rain." Students write and self-check.
Targeted Scaffolding & Extensions
Support & Intervention
Use physical Elkonin sound boxes with counters before writing letters.
Provide tactile letter tiles for ai and ay so students manipulate them as single units.
Pre-highlight vowel pairs in decodable sentences.
Extension & Challenge
Introduce two-syllable compound words (e.g., railroad, playground, daydream, paintbox ).
Have students write an original 2-sentence silly story using at least two ai and two ay words.
Common Misconceptions & How to Correct
Misconception Student Error Example Instructional Revoice Ending in "ai" plai, dai "Remember, English words don't end in 'i'! Swap it to 'y' at the end: play ." Middle with "ay" rayn, trayn "Where is the sound? In the middle! In the middle we use 'ai': rain ." Treating as two sounds /a/ - /i/ "They are a team! They hold hands to make one sound: /ā/."

Looking Out the Window
The sky was dark and gray. Cold rain fell down in buckets on the green hills. A long train sped down the wet track: choo-choo!
Ray looked outside and gave a deep sigh. Kay sat by the door with her coat in her hands. They had to stay inside and wait for the clouds to pass.
2
The Bright Idea
"What can we do on such a wet day?" asked Ray. "The park is full of mud."
Kay clapped her hands with joy. "We will not mope! We can still play right here. I have squishy gray clay, and Mom has jars of bright paint!"

Paint and Clay
Ray ran to fetch a big metal tray. He dipped his brush into red and blue paint. On smooth paper, he drew a tiny snail crawling on a leafy garden trail.
Kay rolled her soft clay into round balls. She shaped a cute puppy with floppy ears and a wagging tail.
They did not mind the cold rain one bit. It turned out to be the best day of the week to stay inside and play!
