Grade 2 Grammar: Concrete Nouns
Objective
Students will identify and categorize concrete nouns (people, places, things) in sentences and real-world contexts.
Duration
45-50 Minutes
Materials
Noun Expedition Slides, Raúl's Suitcase Worksheet, Noun Map Anchor Chart, Markers.
1. Warm-up: Classroom "I Spy" (5 min)
Goal: Activate prior knowledge of physical objects and people.
- Lead a quick game of "I Spy." Example: "I spy something blue..." (a chair).
- On the board, create two columns: People and Things.
- As students name items, list them in the correct column.
2. Video Expedition (10 min)
Goal: Define "Noun" and introduce the four categories.
Critical Pause Points:
- Pause at 1:10: Read the four sentences about Raúl together. Ask: "Can you find any nouns (names, places, or animals) here before the video tells us?"
- Pause at 3:56: Review the four categories shown: People, Places, Things, and Ideas. Ask: "Which one is the hardest to touch?"
3. Activity: Raúl's Suitcase (20 min)
Goal: Application of categorization skills.
- Distribute the Raúl's Suitcase Worksheet.
- Challenge: Raúl is going on a trip! Students must draw 6 items Raúl needs.
- Categorize: Under each drawing, they must check if it is a Person (like a travel buddy), a Place (a postcard of where he is going), or a Thing (his scarf).
4. Closure: The "Idea" Challenge (10 min)
Goal: Conceptual understanding of abstract vs. concrete nouns.
- Ask: "Did anyone pack an 'Idea' like 'Happiness' or a 'Dream' in their suitcase?"
- Discussion: "Why is it hard to pack an idea? Can we see it? Can we touch it?"
- Reinforce: Nouns are mostly things we can see, but sometimes they are things we feel or think!
