The /oy/ Gliding Sound
Rule 1: Location Check!
oi Beginning / Middle
Use oi when the /oy/ sound is caught in the middle of a word or syllable.
c - oi - n → coin
s - p - oi - l → spoil
p - oi - n - t → point
oy End of Syllable
Use oy when the /oy/ sound lands at the very end of a base word or syllable.
b - oy → boy
j - oy → joy
l - oy - a - l → loy - al
Voyager Secret: English words almost NEVER end with letter I! That's why we use Y!
The /ow/ Bandage Sound
Rule 2: "Ouch!" Sounds
ou Inside The Word
Spelling ou loves hiding in the middle of words. It does not like to end a word!
c - l - ou - d → cloud
s - h - ou - t → shout
h - ou - n - d → hound
ow End OR Before N / L
Spelling ow sits at the end of words, or right before the letters N or L .
c - ow → cow
c - l - ow - n → clown
h - ow - l → howl
Test Yourself: Is it "s - n - ___ - t"? It's inside, ending in T → snou t!
The /aw/ Yawn Sound
Rule 3: Open Wide!
au Start or Middle
Use au in the middle or beginning of root words. Never at the end!
l - au - n - c - h → launch
v - au - l - t → vault
h - au - n - t → haunt
aw End OR Before K / L / N
Use aw at the end of words or right before consonants k, l, n .
c - l - aw → claw
h - aw - k → hawk
c - r - aw - l → crawl
Remember: English words do not like to end in U, so W saves the day!

Roy walked along the rocky shore of Oyster Bay at dawn. The morning clouds were gray, and the damp soil smelled of salt. Suddenly, Roy heard a loud howl echo across the lawn! A brown hound with dirty paws was trapped near an old launch boat.
Roy did not want the dog to spoil in the cold rain. “Come here, loyal boy!” Roy said with joy. He held out a shiny toy to draw the hound close. The hound gave a joyful bark, shook his snout, and trotted safely out. Roy was proud of his morning rescue!
