Narrative Drive Teacher Guide
Narrative Drive
Teacher Facilitation Guide • Grade 6 ELA
40 Minute Session
Learning Objective
Students will analyze how the Conflict (But) serves as the engine for a character's Action (So), demonstrating an understanding of cause-and-effect in narrative structure.
Focus Standards
- RL.6.2 Determine a central idea and provide an objective summary.
- RL.6.3 Describe how a story's plot unfolds in a series of episodes and how characters respond to challenges.
Inventory
- Story Blueprint Slides
- Summary Remix Worksheet
- SWBST Khan Academy Video
- Sticky Notes (Optional)
Phase Sequence
01. The Boredom Diagnosis
5 Mins
Pose the question: "What makes a story boring?" Collect student responses on the board.
"Look for answers like 'nothing happens' or 'it was just talking.' Explain that without a conflict—a 'BUT'—there is no narrative drive to push the character forward."
02. Engineering the Acronym
5 Mins
Play the Khan Academy video. Pause at 0:29. Have students record the SWBST definitions in Part 1 of their worksheets.
Discussion: Ask students why "BUT" is the most important part. (Answer: It causes the "SO" and leads to the "THEN").
03. The Conflict Remix
25 Mins
Students complete the worksheet in two phases:
Phase A: Capture
Summarize the Arabella story as it actually happened in the video.
Phase B: Remix
Pick a new "Glitch" and engineer a logical response and resolution.
Reference Blueprint
Original Story Summary Data
Someone
Arabella the Gnome
Wanted
To live alone and grow/eat onions.
But
The Onion Blight threatened the crops.
So
She went to the Danger Lands to confront the villain.
Then
She turned him into a bug and saved the onions.
Facilitation Notes
Check for Logic: In the Remix phase, if a student picks the "Opera Singing Onions" glitch but still says Arabella "turned Lord Nasty into a bug," challenge them. Why would she do that? Lord Nasty didn't cause the singing onions!
Differentiation: For struggling students, provide a pre-written "So" (e.g., "So Arabella invited the onions to a concert") and ask them to work backward to the "But" or forward to the "Then."

L-101
The Boredom Bug
What makes a story truly boring?
Common Symptoms
- No central conflict.
- Nothing is at stake.
- Events don't connect.
A story without a "BUT" is just a list of things that happened.

The Narrative Engine
The "BUT" (Cause)
Arabella's onions are threatened by the Blight.
The "SO" (Effect)
She goes to the Danger Lands to face the villain.
"Conflict is the fuel that moves a character into action."
If you change the But, your So must change to stay logical.

Mission Briefing
01
Capture
Summarize the original Arabella story on your worksheet.
02
Glitch
Inject a NEW Conflict (But) into the story engine.
03
Engineer
Rewrite the "So" and "Then" to fit your new reality.

The Conflict Glitch
Choose one new "But" or invent your own
A
The onions gained sentience and started singing opera, refusing to be eaten.
B
Arabella discovered that Lord Nasty was actually a famous chef who just wanted her recipe.
C
Arabella found a magic map that said the onions weren't blighted—they were made of gold!

Re-Routing the Narrative
1. My New "But" (Conflict)
2. My New "So" (Reaction)
How does she respond to this specific new problem?
3. My New "Then" (Outcome)
How does the story finally end?
Logic Verification Required
"So" solves "But"
"Then" is logical
