MARCH READING MADNESS
A Month-Long Literacy Tournament Guide
The Mission
Engage students in high-volume, high-quality reading by gamifying the book completion process with a "tournament" style competition.
The Players
Students in Grades 3-8. Competition is designed for chapter books and novels. (Note: Picture books are not eligible for points).
The Timeline
March 1st - March 31st. Culminating in a "Championship" celebration the first week of April.
The Ground Rules
1
Scouting the Talent (Book Selection)
Students select books appropriate for their reading level. To maintain the challenge, picture books do not count toward tournament points.
2
The 5-Question Fast Break (Verification)
Points are ONLY awarded after a book is finished AND the student passes a 5-question basic comprehension quiz created by the teacher.
3
Climbing the Bracket (The Leaderboard)
Teachers record verified points on the Classroom Ledger. Students can see their ranking rise on the leaderboard as they complete more quizzes.
Activity Ideas
Book Pep Rallies
Start each Monday with a 10-minute "hype session" where students give 30-second elevator pitches for the books they are currently reading.
Weekly "Draft" Day
Students browse the library to "draft" their next 2-3 books. Create a library display of "Top Draft Picks."
Reading Huddles
Group students who are reading similar genres for 15-minute discussion circles to check in on plot and character development.
Halftime Reports
Mid-month reflection. Students write a short review of their progress and set a "Final Four" goal of books for the second half of March.
