Gather students to the rug. Hold up a toy magnifying glass and read a tired "bed-to-bed" story in a monotone voice:
"I woke up. I ate cereal. I went to the water park. I swam. I ate lunch. I went on slides. I went home and slept. The end."

Give partner pairs three quick story slips or display Slide 4. Partners hold up fingers (1 for Watermelon, 2 for Slice, 3 for Seed):

If you observe... Prompting Language to Use Immediate Action Step Bed-to-bed timeline ("First... next... then... then we went home.") "Point your finger to the one part of this day where your eyes went wide or your stomach did a flip. Tell me that 2 minutes!" Have student circle that single sentence and move it to Page 1 of the Journal. Only action, zero sensory detail ("I hit the ball. I ran.") "Freeze right as the bat struck! What sound did the wood make? What color was the dirt flying up around your sneakers?" Student adds 1 sound word (CRACK!) and 1 physical feeling. Strong seed picked, unsure how to finish "How did that tiny moment change how you felt inside? What thought popped into your brain right as it ended?" Draft a memorable thought bubble or exclamation to close the narrative.
Support & Multilingual
Provide sentence starters ("Right when I saw..." , "I heard a loud..." ). Let students draw the 2-minute freeze-frame first and dictate audio to partner.
On-Grade Target
Uses the "Watermelon to Seed Worksheet" to narrow down, then drafts at least 4-5 detail-rich lines with dialogue or inner thought in the Narrative Journal.
Extension Authors
Incorporate "slow motion" narrative pacing: stretch a 10-second moment (e.g., catching a pop fly) across three full descriptive sentences.
