Chapter 5 • The Pine Cone Prize Page 5

The Prize

Cole reached the giant pine tree. Right under a thick branch lay a huge brown pine cone.

Cole used a stick to poke under the cone. His stick clicked against wood! Beneath the needles was a cedar box filled with sweet, ripe plums and melon slices.

Cole took some fruit and ate a sweet plum. “This tastes grand!” Cole chirped.

Chapter 6 • Back in the Snug Den Page 6

Safe at Last

The golden sun set behind the hill. Cole packed the fruit into his sack and carried it back down the slope.

He slid deep into his safe hole. He put his red robe back on and curled up on his soft bed.

Cole closed his eyes in his cozy home. “What a wonderful trip,” said Cole the mole.

Rose and Cole rode their bicycles down the winding road as the evening sun dipped below the hills.

Rose arrived at her cozy home. She put the jump rope on the hook and showed her mother the prize pine cones.
