Magic E Lesson Plan
Pacing & Instructional Guide
Magic E Long O: 4-Day Master Plan
Focus: Phonics Decoding, Orthographic Mapping, Fluency & Literature Comprehension
Pacing: 40 Mins / Day (4 Days)
Target Grade: Grade 1 – Grade 2
Standards: CCSS.RF.1.3.C, RF.2.3.A
Lesson Objective: Students will decode, map, and spell words with the Magic E (o_e) pattern with ≥80% accuracy, apply decoding skills to a connected decodable literature passage, and demonstrate reading comprehension.
D1
Day 1: The Magic E Transformation (40 Mins)
Phonics & Decoding
1. Warm-Up (5 min)
Short vowel review (/ŏ/). Quick flash: hop, rob, not, cod. Students tap short sounds.
2. Direct Teach (10 min)
Introduce Magic E: “Silent E sends all its power to vowel O to say its name!” Demonstrate wand switch.
3. Guided Choral (15 min)
Choral blend contrast pairs: hop→hope, rob→robe, slop→slope. Finger-tap sounds then slide.
4. Practice (10 min)
Complete Practice Packet Page 1 (Section A). Partner swap and read decoded words aloud.
Teacher Checkpoint: Listen for students trying to vocalize the silent 'e' (/hō-pē/). Reinforce: “Silent E is a quiet ninja!”
D2
Day 2: Orthographic Mapping & Fluency (40 Mins)
Mapping & Sentences
1. Sound Sprint (8 min)
Slide drill: Rapid onset-rime blending (/b/ + /ōn/ = bone, /st/ + /ōn/ = stone). Choral speed rounds.
2. Sound Mapping (12 min)
Elkonin sound boxes. Map phonemes into 3 sound boxes while placing silent e in the crown box at the end.
3. Sentence Fluency (12 min)
Scooping technique: Model reading connected decodable phrases with expression, smooth cadence, and pacing.
4. Partner Check (8 min)
Students read sentences to peers. Complete Practice Packet Page 1 (Sections B & C). Formative exit word.
Teacher Checkpoint: Ensure students map blends (e.g., /s/ /t/ in stone) as two distinct sound boxes before the vowel.

Day 3: Literature Connection & Comprehension (40 Mins)
Decodable Story & Inquiry
1. Pre-Reading & Vocab (10 min)
Preview literature passage “Mole’s Secret Note”. Discuss animal moles, burrows, and vocabulary: stone, slope, globe, hole. Anchor prediction: Why did Toby find a note?
2. Shared & Paired Reading (15 min)
First read: Teacher models fluent reading. Students use yellow highlighters to spot and code all o_e words. Second read: Partner whisper-read with fluency tracking.
3. Text Evidence Q&A (15 min)
Students complete comprehension questions on Practice Packet Page 2. Emphasize answering in complete thoughts using text evidence (character, plot obstacle, resolution).
D4
Day 4: Assessment & Teacher Mastery Tracker (40 Mins)
Mastery & Data Check
1. Independent Assessment (15 min)
Administer Day 4 Mastery Check (Student Packet Page 3): 5 decodable word identifications, 3 sentence cloze items, and 2 phoneme spelling items. No peer collaboration.
2. Teacher Tracker & 1-on-1 (15 min)
While class starts extra-time games, teacher pulls targeted students for 1-minute oral word probes. Record data directly on the Mastery Tracker Roster (80% benchmark).
3. Targeted Reteach & Tier 2 (10 min)
Group students scoring <80% for immediate tactile intervention (magnetic letters & wand swaps). Masters lead literacy stations.
Fast Finishers & Extra Time
Engaging Reading Games & Extension Activities
1. Roll & Read Showdown
Partners roll a die and read the corresponding long o line on the game board. First to claim 4 words in a row wins!
2. Magic Wand Word Swap
Students use popsicle-stick "E" wands on index cards to transform short o CVC words into real or nonsense CVCe words.
3. Long O Riddle Maker
Students pick a target word (e.g. rope, cone, rose) and write a 2-clue riddle for a classmate to solve on scrap paper.
Support / ELL Scaffolds
Provide physical tokens for phoneme mapping. Color-code the vowel ‘o’ in blue and silent ‘e’ in yellow to reinforce orthographic structure.
Extension / High Mastery
Challenge students to write a 3-sentence sequel to Mole’s Secret Note incorporating 4 new long o words (e.g., choke, smoke, froze, spoke).

Day 1: Watch the Magic Transformation!
Short Vowel /ŏ/ → Long Vowel /ō/

Read the decodable story carefully. Circle 6 words that have the Magic E long o pattern, then answer the questions below.
Decodable Reading Passage
Target: o_e
Toby the mole lived in a quiet hole on a sunny slope. Each morning, he liked to sit on a flat stone right outside his home.
One sunny afternoon, Toby smelled the fresh scent of a red rose. Right beside the rose, he spotted a folded note tied with a bright pink rope! Toby gently lifted the note and unfolded it.
“Dear Toby, Why did the puppy sit by the bone? Because he did not want to lose his tone! P.S. I hope you can come to my home for a sweet melon ice cream cone! Your friend, Rose Fox.”
Toby let out a happy cheer. He folded the note, grabbed his tote bag, and hopped down the path with a huge smile!
Word Detective: Write 4 Magic E words you found in the story:
1. Setting & Character: Where is Toby the mole’s home, and where did he find the secret note?
2. Key Details: What was tied around the note, and what treat did Rose Fox invite Toby to eat?
