Stop and Lock Teacher Guide
Instructional routine for students who blend initial sounds accurately but substitute, guess, or drop the coda.
Why Students Change the Ending Sound:
Students typically substitute ending sounds due to phonological working memory decay (forgetting the final phoneme after blending onset-vowel) or rime-guessing (predicting familiar word families like reading -at whenever they see -a-). Direct intervention must emphasize holding the vocalic glide until physically striking the final sound.
1
The "Punch & Lock" Multi-Sensory Routine
Step A: Slide & Hold
Blend the onset and vowel continuously without pausing. Student slides finger across the ramp.
"caaaa..." (keep voice on!)
Step B: Target & Tap
Look directly at the last letter. Touch the "Lock Box" before saying anything. Anchor student's eyes!
"Eyes on the last letter: T"
Step C: Punch & Lock
Punch fist softly into open palm on the final stop sound. Release the crisp sound cleanly with no added "uh".
"caaa... PUNCH /t/! -> CAT"
Direct Instruction Script (5-Minute Explicit Mini-Lesson)
Teacher (I Do): "Watch my eyes and my hand. I see the word C-A-P. I am going to slide the first two sounds: /k/ /aaa/... I keep my motor running: caaaa... Now I freeze at the end! What letter is locking the door? It's P! Punch it: /p/! CAP! Notice I didn't say cat. I read the sound that was actually there."
Guided (We Do): "Let's do C-A-N together. Put your finger on the slide. Slide the start: caaaa... Freeze! What letter is locked in the box? N. Tap the lock and say it: /nnn/. Blend: caaa-nnn, CAN! High five—you caught the /n/!"
Instant Error Correction Protocol
When student says "cat" for the printed word CAP, execute this 3-second routine immediately:
1. Stop & Cover: Cover the first two letters. Isolate the final letter P. Ask: "What sound is this?" (/p/).
2. Hold & Connect: Uncover all letters. "Hold the start: caaa... and punch that /p/!"
3. Contrast Check: "If it were cat, what letter would be at the end? Yes, T. But look, it's P!"

Targeted Minimal Contrast Ladders
Use systematic sets that freeze onset-vowel while swapping only the final consonant to break habitual guessing.

Coda Sound Categories (Teach the Difference)
Stop Sounds (Must "Punch & Clip"):
Letters: /t/, /p/, /k/ (c/k), /d/, /b/, /g/
Teaching tip: Do not let the student append a schwa (avoid "tuh", "puh"). Have them whisper the stop sound or snap their fingers cleanly.
Continuous Sounds (Must "Stretch & Hold"):
Letters: /m/, /n/, /s/, /z/, /f/, /l/
Teaching tip: These sounds can be sung or buzzed. Tell the student to "turn on their motor" and feel the vibration in their throat/nose.
15-Minute Mini-Lesson Implementation Schedule
Min 0-3
Explicit Model: Teacher demonstrates the Punch & Lock routine on board using 2 contrasting words (e.g., pot vs pop). Highlight the mouth shape of the final sound.
Min 3-10
Guided Mat Practice: Student uses the Blend and Lock Activity Mat with sliding finger routine. Complete 6 minimal pair trials with immediate corrective feedback.
Min 10-15
Exit Check & Tally: Administer the 5-item Exit Ticket. Mark diagnostic tally to determine if error is articulatory, visual, or memory-based.

Oral Probe Administration
Diagnostic Scoring & Administration Guide
How to Administer the Oral Probe:
- Do NOT show the student this scoring page. Keep this page on your clipboard.
- Place Page 1 in front of the student. Have them complete Part 1 independently first.
- For Part 2, point your pen or finger at Card 1 (pen) on the student's page and say: "Look all the way to the end, slide it, and lock the sound."
- Do not correct errors during the probe. Simply record their exact pronunciation in the table below.
