By tracking every lingering scroll, click, and search query, these systems construct personalized "filter bubbles" that prioritize user engagement over objective reality, transforming a tool of global connection into an invisible chamber of intellectual isolation.
[¶2] This sorting mechanism functions by exploiting a fundamental vulnerability in human psychology: confirmation bias. Our brains are hardwired to seek validation, interpreting friendly evidence as objective truth while dismissing challenging perspectives as hostile noise. When an algorithm detects that a user lingers longer on articles confirming their existing political or social biases, it feeds them more of the same. This feedback loop triggers micro-doses of digital dopamine, creating a psychological comforting mechanism. The user is left insulated from cognitive dissonance, mistaking their highly curated feed for a representative, objective sample of the wider world.
