Detective Detail Lesson Plan Intervention Tier 2 / Tier 3 Protocol
Detective Detail Anchor Lesson Plan
Grade 5 • ELA Intervention
Duration: 45–50 Mins
Focus Standards
CCSS RI.5.1: Quote accurately from text when explaining / drawing inferences.
CCSS RI.5.2: Determine central ideas & summarize supporting key details.
Core Objective
Students will physically isolate 1 central idea and at least 2 pieces of text evidence using color-coded tactile strips and frame responses with sentence stems.
Multisensory Materials
Yellow strips (Central Idea), Cyan strips (Key Evidence), glue sticks, student highlighter pens, Case File Evidence Worksheets.
Tactile Strip Forensic System (Color Rule)
Gold/Yellow Strip = Central Idea (The big case: what the whole text investigates)
Teal/Cyan Strip = Supporting Evidence (The forensic clues that prove the central idea is true)
Pacing & Instructional Sequence (Part 1)
1 Cold Case Hook & Bellringer Activator (7 Mins) Diagnostic / Engage
Distribute the Clue Catcher Warm Up . Read the micro-case "The Mystery of the Flooded Locker." Prompt students to distinguish the "Big Crime" from individual clues.
Teacher Script: "Detectives never confuse a single muddy footprint with the entire crime. A single fact is just a clue; the central idea is the whole umbrella case. Today we will become forensic reading detectives."
2 Direct Modeling / "I Do" – The Tactile Strip Method (12 Mins) Slides 1–4
Project slide presentation. Display model paragraph: The Mystery of the Sunken Forest . Demonstrate physical strip placement under a document camera or on board.
Step A (Scan): Read paragraph completely once without marking to gather the crime scene overview.
Step B (Anchor Central Idea): Place Gold Strip over the sentence that covers all sentences. Test with question: "Does every other detail fit under this roof?"
Step C (Tag Clues): Place Cyan Strips over 2 specific facts proving the gold statement.
Step D (Stem Stamping): Orally model sentence stem: "The text proves that [Central Idea] because it states [Evidence]."

Tier 2 Small-Group Architecture
3 Guided Practice / "We Do" – Partner Crime Scene Investigation (12 Mins) Case File Page 1
Students partner as Detective Duos. Each duo receives tactile strips and the Case File Evidence Worksheet (Case 1: Honeybee Compass).
Teacher Role: Circulate with clipboard rubric; prompt partners: "Why can't sentence #3 be the central idea? What makes it just a supporting footprint?"
Student Action: Physically move yellow/cyan strip markers before writing or pasting down answers. Read aloud sentence stems.
4 Independent Detective Work / "You Do" (11 Mins) Case File Page 2
Learners complete the solitary case investigation: Bioluminescent Ocean Depths . Students highlight or paste strips and complete the written Evidence Ledger utilizing the mandatory sentence stem.
5 Case File Debrief & Exit Routine (5 Mins) Wrap Up
Conduct a 60-second whip-around: Each student reads one constructed sentence frame stating their case evidence aloud.
Tiered Sentence Stems Bank
Tier 1 Support (Foundational / Emerging ELL):
"The text is mainly about [central idea]. One clue that proves this is [evidence]."
Tier 2 Support (Proficient / Expanding):
"The central idea is that [central idea]. According to paragraph __, the author demonstrates this when [direct quote or fact]."
Common Misconception
Trap: Selecting an interesting fact or first sentence as central idea.
Intervention Cue: Ask: "Does this clue explain the whole case, or is it just one suspect at the scene?"
Accommodations & IEP
Provide pre-cut, magnetic, or velcro-backed strips for fine motor assistance. Allow audio text reading for decoding intervention.

Detective Detail Anchor
Cracking the case by isolating Central Ideas and capturing forensic Text Evidence with color-coded strips.
Target: CCSS RI.5.1 & RI.5.2
Tool: Tactile Strip Forensic System
Grade 5 Reading Intervention Mission: Turn Text into Evidence
The Core Detective Rule
Case Principle #1
1
The Umbrella Case
The Central Idea
The single big message that covers the entire text . If details do not fit under this roof, it is not the central idea!
Ask: "What is the author's primary claim?"
2
The Footprints
Supporting Evidence
Specific facts, numbers, quotes, and descriptions that prove the case is true. One footprint cannot solve the case alone!
Ask: "What exact proof did the author leave?"
Rule: Never mistake a single clue footprint for the entire crime scene!
The Tactile Forensic Strip System
Color Code Protocol
Gold Strip
Primary Central Idea
Place this strip over the sentence that encapsulates the entire paragraph or passage.
Cyan Strip
Forensic Clues & Evidence
Place these strips directly over sentences containing hard facts, numbers, or proof.
Touch and slide strips
Test the umbrella fit

Live Case Investigation • "I Do"
Mystery of the Sunken Forest
Exhibit A
[Gold Strip • Central Idea]
Deep beneath the waters of Lake Mystery lies a preserved ancient forest that reveals prehistoric climate secrets.
