Instructional Guide • Focus: Definition Clues & Sentence Meaning Clues
Duration: 60 Minutes
Standards: CCSS.RI.3.4, L.3.4.A
Format: Whole / Small / Independent
Learning Objectives
Identify definition clues using appositives, commas, and signal words (is, or, means ).
Infer unfamiliar word meanings using surrounding sentence details and descriptive actions.
Cite exact clue words from nonfiction text to justify word definitions.
Materials Needed
Reading Passage: Creatures of the Midnight Zone (1 per student)
Student Practice Worksheet: Deep Sea Word Detectives
Highlighters (Yellow for target words, Green for clue text)
Class Anchor Chart or Document Camera for modeling
Anchor Framework: The Two Clue Types
1. Definition Clues Explicit Clue
The author directly explains the word's meaning in the same or next sentence.
Signal Words: is defined as, which means, or, [word], [comma definition]
2. Sentence Meaning Clues Inference Clue
Nearby words, actions, and details hint at what the word must mean in context.
Look For: Actions, sensory details, reasons why, cause & effect words
10 Min Hook
Engage & Activate: The Secret Code Mystery
Write on the board: "The deep submarine turned on its lucid beams so scientists could see the dark ocean floor clearly." Cover the word lucid with a sticky note. Ask: "What kind of beams help you see clearly in the pitch black?" Students deduce "bright" or "shining." Reveal that authors give away word secrets through surrounding hints.

Direct Instruction: Teacher Think-Aloud & Modeling
Project Paragraph 1 of the passage. Model finding the word bioluminescence .
Script: "Notice how the author writes: '...bioluminescence, or light made naturally by living bodies.' Look at that comma and the little word 'or'! That tells me the author is handing me a definition on a silver platter. That is a Definition Clue ."
Step-by-Step Routine: 1. Circle the unknown word. 2. Underline clue phrases. 3. Name the clue type. 4. Substitute your meaning to test if it makes sense.

15 Min We Do
Guided Practice: Partner Clue Hunt
Have partners read Paragraph 2 and examine the target word frigid .
Guiding Question: "Does the author say 'frigid means'? No! But what words tell us what the water feels like? 'Near-freezing temperatures' and 'ice-cold depth'."
Labeling: Guide students to identify this as a Sentence Meaning Clue because the surrounding details paint a sensory picture.
15 Min You Do
Independent Application: Detective Worksheet
Students complete the Deep Sea Word Detectives worksheet independently. They analyze 6 nonfiction vocabulary words (predator, lure, illuminate, immense, scarce, camouflage), underline clues in the sentences, determine the clue type, and write definitions in their own words.
5 Min Closure
Debrief & Exit Ticket Check
Conduct a 30-second rapid check: "If you see a word between two commas right after a tricky word, what clue type is it?" (Definition Clue). "If an animal is running from a lion, what clue helps you define 'flee'?" (Sentence Meaning Clue).
Differentiation & Scaffolding Guide
Struggling Readers & EL Learners
Provide a Signal Word Bookmark highlighting commas, dashes, and words like is, or, called .
Pre-highlight the target vocabulary word so students immediately focus on the surrounding sentence clues.
Allow oral rephrasing before writing down definitions.
Advanced & Early Finishers
Have students craft their own nonfiction sentences about ocean animals containing both an explicit definition clue and a sentence meaning clue.
Challenge them to identify antonym or contrast clues in supplementary science readers.
Common Misconceptions & How to Correct
Misconception: Students guess the definition using random background knowledge rather than looking at the text clues.
Correction: Always ask: "Which exact 3 words in the sentence prove that your guess is true?" Require highlighter proof before writing.

Ocean Glow Reading Passage Nonfiction Explorer Reader | Grade 3 Science & Literacy
Name: Date:
Deep Sea Biology • Word Detective Text
Creatures of the Midnight Zone
Explore how extraordinary animals survive in Earth's deepest, darkest waters.
Depth: 3,000+ Ft
1
Thousands of feet beneath the ocean surface lies the "Midnight Zone." Sunlight cannot travel this deep, leaving the water in total darkness. The water here is frigid . Near-freezing temperatures chill the deep sea, and biting, ice-cold currents flow constantly across the ocean floor. Yet despite the freezing black water, bizarre animals thrive. Many make their own light using bioluminescence , which is natural light created inside an animal's body. These glowing creatures shine like stars in the midnight depths.
2
One famous deep-sea creature is the female anglerfish. Finding food in the pitch-black water is tough because meals are scarce ; prey animals are rare, and an anglerfish might drift for weeks without encountering another living creature. To hunt, she uses a glowing lure , or bait that dangles from a long spine above her head to trick curious fish. When a wandering fish swims close to investigate the light, this fierce predator snaps its jaw shut and eats its prey in a single bite.
3
Another strange ocean hunter is the gulper eel. It has a tiny body connected to a giant mouth with expandable jaws. This jaw allows the gulper eel to consume immense meals that are twice as big as itself, stretching its stomach like an enormous balloon. At the tip of its whip-like tail is a red organ that can illuminate , lighting up the surrounding water so other creatures are drawn right into its waiting trap.
4
Not every deep-sea animal is a giant-mouthed hunter. Smaller creatures, like the glass squid, rely on stealth to stay alive. Its skin is transparent , meaning its body is completely clear and see-through like a glass window. This built-in disguise provides perfect camouflage . By blending silently into the open water, the squid stays invisible so hungry hunters swim right past without noticing.
