Powerful Adjectives
Don't just name something—describe it! Use adjectives to add detail and color to your world.
Example: Instead of "a tree," try "a tall, ancient tree with gnarled roots."
The Five Senses
Make your reader feel like they are actually there. What do your characters see, hear, smell, taste, or feel?
Example: "The air smelled of fresh pine and the sharp tang of ozone before a storm."
Vivid Imagery
Paint a picture in the reader's mind. Use specific, strong words that create a clear "mental movie" of your story's world.
Instead of...
"The sun set."
Try This!
"The sun sank below the horizon in a blaze of orange and violet."
Similes & Metaphors
The Simile
Comparing two things using the words 'like' or 'as' .
"Her smile was as bright as the morning sun."
The Metaphor
Comparing two things by saying one thing is another.
"The moon was a silver coin tossed into the night sky."
