Drama Detective Rule: In our play today, we will use this exact same filter to sift Scene 2 & Scene 3!

I Do • Teacher Modeling Recap

How We Built the Scene 1 Summary

Strategy Anchor

Step 1: Top Box

List the Big Events Only

    1. Mother Grizzly cautions cubs not to wander downriver.
    1. The cubs disobey, wander away, and nap on a flat rock.
    1. The rock magically rises high into the clouds!

✓ Exactly 3 core events! We left out extra play chatter!

Step 2: Bottom Box

Synthesize in Your Own Words

"In Scene 1, Mother Grizzly warns her cubs to stay close. The curious cubs wander down the valley to play, fall asleep on a flat rock, and are carried into the clouds when the rock magically grows."

✨ Somebody (Mother) Wanted (Safety)... But (Cubs Slept on Rock)... So (Trapped)!

Teacher Golden Rule: Just like with the pigs, only keep events that move the drama forward!

We Do • Partner Work

Scene 2: "The Search & The Failed Climbers"

Reader Pages 340–344

[Mother Grizzly gathers Fox, Badger, Mother Deer, Mountain Lion, & Mouse to search downriver.]

FOX: Look, everyone. There is a mountain where there was only a stone before.

HAWK (calling down): They are asleep on this strange new mountain... The wind will not let me reach your little ones.

[STAGE DIRECTION: The animals try to climb one by one. Mother Grizzly, Mouse, Badger, Deer, Fox, and Mountain Lion all fail and tumble back!]

MEASURING WORM: I will try. [Animals laugh, but Mother Grizzly welcomes his help. He begins to stretch and curl—"Tu-tok!"]

Turn to Your Partner: What is the big turning point at the end of Scene 2? Who volunteers when everyone else fails?

We Do • Partner Mission

Sifting Scene 2 with Your Partner

Worksheet Top Box

INVESTIGATE

6 Story Clues

Pages 340–344

A Fox & Badger lean cedar planks against poles.

B Animals discover cubs asleep atop the new mountain.

C Mother Deer and her fawns grind acorns.

D Hawk & larger animals try climbing and fail.

E Mouse weaves a basket before joining search.

F Measuring Worm courageously volunteers to climb.

Which 3 are Major Turning Points? Which 3 are Minor Fluff?

Partner Steps

1. Test the Golden Filter:

"If we delete this detail from the play, does the rescue change?"

2. Sift Out the Fluff:

Spot everyday village chores and leave them out!

3. Agree & Record:

Write your 3 Core Events into Box 1 on Page 1.

🤝 Both partners must agree before writing!

Partner Stem: "I think Clue __ is a CORE EVENT / FLUFF because without it, the rescue would / would not change!"

We Do Check • Sifting Debrief

Check Your Sift: Core Events vs. Fluff

Class Debrief

TOP BOX 1 ⭐ KEEP: Core Events (Clues B, D, F)

  • ✓ Clue B: Mother Grizzly and the animals discover the cubs asleep atop the giant new mountain.
  • ✓ Clue D: Hawk and all the larger animals try to climb up and rescue them, but they all fail.
  • ✓ Clue F: Tiny Measuring Worm (Tu-tok-a-na) courageously volunteers and begins climbing.

💡 These 3 events create the crisis, prove the danger, and start the rescue!

LEAVE OUT ☁️ SKIP: Minor Fluff (Clues A, C, E)

  • ✕ Clue A: Fox and Badger were leaning cedar planks against poles.
  • ✕ Clue C: Mother Deer and her fawns were grinding acorns.
  • ✕ Clue E: Mouse was weaving a basket before joining the search.

🗑️ Background village chores; deleting them changes zero plot events!

Teacher Checkpoint: Check your worksheet Box 1! Make any quick fixes with your partner before drafting your summary!
