Display Slides 5 & 6. Model connecting the 4 cards: [The] + [silly] + [monkey] + [hops.].
Model Detective Scan on Uniform Text: Write "a fuzzy bear hugs max." on board with identical chalk/marker (no colored hints). Model sliding pointer finger: "Word 1 is 'a'—sentence start needs a crown! Now scan inside: 'max' is a name—needs a crown! 'Hugs' is our verb—circle it!" Rewrite on 3-line ruling.
Phase 5
10 Minutes
Sentence Builder Mat Station: Students use their 4 card decks (Yellow, Blue, Green, Red) to lay out 4-part sentences on the Builder Mat. They crown the starter and any names/I, then copy onto the primary 3-line ruling.
Worksheet Completion: Students complete Action Builder Worksheet Page 1 (guided items) and Page 2 (detective hunt & card recording). Remind them that name takes the full top row, date underneath!
Phase 6
4 Minutes
Distribute cut half-sheets (Slip A or B). Students work independently for 4 minutes to identify both missing capitals (start + name/"I"), circle the verb, and rewrite on primary handwriting lines. Collect immediately for formative grouping.
Intervention (Struggling Capitalizers)
Use the "Yellow Crayon Crown": Have student place a yellow token or draw a small crown above word 1, any names, and "I" before writing on lines.
Extension (Fast Builders)
Verb Swap: Keep the first 3 cards identical, swap 3 different red verbs, and act out each version to observe the change in meaning.
