Warm-up: The "Fastly" Debate (5 mins)
Display Slide 2. Prompt students to identify which word does not fit grammatically. Prompt them to observe that while we easily append -ly to standard descriptors (like "quick" ➔ "quickly"), "fastly" is rejected by modern syntax because "fast" already acts as an adverb.
2
Viewing: Vocabulary in Action (5 mins)
Play the Khan Academy video (Slide 3). Ask students to identify how David uses specific color codes for different word groups (verbs, nouns, etc.). Use the visual etymology of "Survive" (Slide 4) to introduce the concept of prefixes and root modifications.
"Pause at 2:20 to discuss the Latin root 'vivere' (to live) and its cognates in other languages (Spanish 'vivir', French 'vivre')."
