Detective Code Closed Syllable Law
What is a Closed Syllable?
A syllable that has one vowel followed by one or more consonants.
The Consonant Traps the Vowel!
When trapped, the vowel says its SHORT sound.
cat
1 vowel trapped by t → /ă/
muf
1 vowel trapped by f → /ŭ/
fin
1 vowel trapped by n → /ĭ/
Remember: Every single syllable MUST have one vowel sound!

Syllable Sleuths
Mission: The VCCV Syllable Bridge
Cracking Multisyllabic
VCCV Closed Words
Yesterday the consonants were identical twins. Today they are different! We will build a bridge between the vowels and split between the consonants.
1
Spot & Label Vowels
2
Build the Consonant Bridge
3
Split Down the Middle
The Bridge Formula Vowel - Consonant - Consonant - Vowel
The VCCV Rule
When two consonants sit between two vowels, divide right between the two consonants:
V C | C V
One consonant stays left. One consonant goes right.
Why Does This Work?
By splitting between the consonants, both syllables stay closed!
den Ends in n → Short /ĕ/
tist Ends in st → Short /ĭ/
Both vowels are trapped by consonants, so both say their short sounds!
I Do (Watch Teacher) Building the Bridge
