Pete and Eve woke up at nine. The sun began to shine on the wide slope. Pete smiled and said, "It is time to hike up to Camp Pine Lake! We can ride our bikes past the old camp gate." Their dog, Duke, was a cute pup who liked to trot along with them.
They took a long rope and a canteen of cold water. Pete packed ripe plums and a fresh lime for a snack. Eve smiled as they rode their bikes up the pine lane. Soon, they saw an old mule standing by a huge stone. The mule gave a soft hum, almost like a tune, and Pete waved as they went by.
At last, they came to Pine Lake. The water made gentle waves on the sand. The day was quite hot, so Pete and Eve made camp in the deep shade of a tall pine tree. "This is the best spot!" Eve said in a safe, calm tone.
Pete set a wide flat stone near their tent. He made a small flame to bake some sweet oat cakes on a tin plate. Duke sat close by, hoping Pete would drop a bite of cake. While the cakes baked, Pete hummed a fun tune.
"Look at those fish dive into the lake!" Pete said. Eve watched them glide and made a note in her log book. They felt safe and glad to spend time at Camp Pine Lake before heading home.

After lunch by Pine Lake, Pete and Eve put Duke on a soft rope leash. They began to hike up a steep stone slope behind the pines. "Look over there!" Eve said with a wide smile. Hidden behind thick vines was the entrance to a dark cave.
Pete held a small torch so its beam could shine on the stone wall. The cave felt cool and safe from the midday heat. Inside, Duke sniffed a flat rock slab. Next to it lay an old metal tube and a carved wooden flute.
Eve took the tube and opened its lid. Inside was a rolled note written on thick paper. Pete read the note aloud in a quiet tone: "Welcome, brave hikers. If you find this cave, play a sweet tune on the flute and keep these woods safe for all."
Eve picked up the wooden flute. She blew gently and played a lively tune that made Duke wag his tail. The notes seemed to glide across the stone walls of the cave. Pete smiled and shared a sweet dried prune and some water.
"It is time to make our way back," Pete said as the sun dipped behind the pines. Eve placed the note back in the tube so other hikers could find it. They felt brave and glad as they rode their bikes back home from Pine Lake.
