Sentence Blueprint

Every sturdy sentence requires a solid foundation. Use this blueprint to inspect, build, and repair your sentences!

The Subject
The noun or pronoun that performs the action or exists in the state of being.
Ask: Who or what is doing it?

The Verb
The action word or linking word showing what the subject is doing or being.
Ask: What is the action/state?

The Thought
Expresses a complete, self-contained idea. Does not leave you waiting for more info.
Ask: Does it make sense alone?
Sentence Formula
SUBJECT + VERB / PREDICATE + COMPLETE THOUGHT = COMPLETE SENTENCE
What is a Fragment?
A fragment is a broken sentence piece. It is missing a subject, a verb, or does not express a complete thought.
How to Repair It
1. Add what's missing: Write in a clear subject or active verb.Combine ideas: Join the fragment with an adjacent complete sentence.

Homophone Blueprints

Homophones are words that sound identical but have different spellings and meanings. Inspect their blueprints below!
1 There • Their • They're
There: Refers to a place/location or indicates existence.
"We placed the tools over there."
Their: Shows ownership by more than one person.
"They brought their own backpacks."
They're: Contraction of they are.
"They're working on the blueprints."
Inspection Test: Replace with "they are". If it makes sense, use they're!
2 Its • It's
Its: Shows possessive ownership (belonging to "it").
"The puppy chased its own tail."
It's: Contraction of it is or it has.
"It's going to rain this afternoon."
Inspection Test: Replace with "it is". If it makes sense, use the apostrophe in it's!
3 Your • You're
Your: Shows possessive ownership (belonging to you).
"Is this your favorite laptop?"
You're: Contraction of you are.
"You're doing a wonderful job!"
Inspection Test: Replace with "you are". If it makes sense, use you're!
4 To • Too • Two
To: Directs toward a place/recipient or starts a verb.
"We walked to school today."
Too: Means also or excessively/very.
"That puppy is too small too!"
Two: The numerical digit 2.
"We own two adorable kittens."
Inspection Test: Replace with "also". If it fits, spell it with double o's (too)!
Apostrophe Blueprint Alert: Apostrophes join words (contractions) but never show ownership in pronouns (its vs it's).
