Day 1: The Table Metaphor
Objective: Understand Main Idea & Details conceptually through a visual metaphor.
ELD Language Objectives
Entering (L1): Point to the tabletop to identify the main idea and the legs to identify details using picture supports.
Emerging (L2): Complete the sentence frame: "The table top is the ________."
Key Vocabulary
Main Idea Details Support Tabletop Table Legs
1
Warm-Up: The Real Table Test 10 mins
Walk over to a classroom table. Balance a stack of heavy books on it. Ask: "What is holding up the books? What happens if I remove all the legs?" Guide students to gesture "fall down!" Introduce the words tabletop (flat, wide, holds everything) and legs (strong, supports/holds up).
2
Direct Instruction: Metaphor Anchor Chart 15 mins
Display the Visual Anchor Chart . Explain: Stories are like tables. The Main Idea is the tabletop (the big message/what it is mostly about). The Supporting Details are the table legs (the facts/sentences that hold up the main idea). Model pointing to the chart and choral chanting: "The main idea is the big thing. The details hold it up!"
3
Guided Practice: Slide Presentation 15 mins
Present Slide Deck Section 1. Show a highly visual story with a main idea table. Drag/point to the three visual items (e.g., different types of food) to show they support the tabletop topic (Healthy Eating). Use the TPR (Total Physical Response) strategy: flat hands for "main idea/tabletop" and fingers pointing down vertically for "supporting details/legs."
4
Scaffolding & Differentiation Tasks ELL FOCUS
Have students color-code a printed mini anchor chart: Color the tabletop yellow (Main Idea) and the four legs blue (Details). L1 Learners: Match cutout pictures of a table parts to labeling cards. L2 Learners: Write "Main Idea" and "Details" in labeled blank spaces.

Day 2: Clue Hunting
Objective: Hunt for the main idea using text features (title, pictures, repeating words).
ELD Language Objectives
Entering (L1): Circle and count repeated key vocabulary words in a simplified text about ants.
Emerging (L2): Verbally state repeating words: "The word ________ repeats."
Key Vocabulary
Title Picture Repeat Ants Colony
1
Warm-Up: Detective Magnifying Glass 10 mins
Introduce the "Detective Theme." Give students a paper cutout of a magnifying glass. Teach them to look closely. Walk through the three clues on the Anchor Chart: Clue 1: Title , Clue 2: Picture , Clue 3: Repeating Words . Choral response with hand gestures (making a camera with hands for "picture", tracking line for "title").
2
Direct Instruction: Finding Clues in "Cool Ants" 15 mins
Display Slide Deck Day 2. Show the short text "Cool Ants". Model highlighting the title in yellow, circling the picture of the ant colony , and counting how many times the word ant or ants appears (e.g., 5 times). Explain: "The title, picture, and repeating words all tell me the main idea is about Ants."
3
Guided Practice: Guided Worksheet Completion 15 mins
Distribute the Ant Clues Worksheet (Leveled Graphic Organizer). Project it on the board. Guide students together to write or trace the title in the clue finder box. Read the story line-by-line using echo reading (teacher reads, students mimic). Guide them to color-code the clues.
4
ELL Scaffolding Checklist ELL FOCUS
Entering (L1): Provide highlighter pens to physically highlight the repeating word. Use a tally chart to count repeats. Emerging (L2): Encourage writing the full sentence: "The main idea is ants because they work together." using the provided word bank.

Day 3: Detail Detective
Objective: Distinguish supporting details from irrelevant "extra" information.
ELD Language Objectives
Entering (L1): Sort detail cards into "Strong Legs" (holds up table) vs. "Broken Legs" (does not belong) by pointing.
Emerging (L2): Explain card choice using: "This is a details because ________."
Key Vocabulary
Strong Leg Broken Leg Belong Extra Info Honeybees
1
Warm-Up: The Broken Table Leg Act 10 mins
Show a picture of a table with a broken leg (or a leg that is a pool noodle or a banana instead of wood!). Ask: "Is this strong? Does it hold the table up?" Guide them to laugh and say "No! It is too silly!" Connect this to texts: Some sentences are silly or "extra" info. They are not strong details!
2
Direct Instruction: Bees and Extra Details 15 mins
Show Day 3 Slides: "Busy Honeybees". Point to the main idea tabletop: "Honeybees have important jobs." Show four sentence legs: 1. "They make honey." 2. "They clean the hive." 3. "I like bees." 4. "They protect the queen." Model crossing out #3 ("I like bees") because it's a feeling/extra info, not a strong leg.
3
Hands-On Practice: Detail Sorting Activity 15 mins
Distribute Bee Detail Sorting Activity printouts. In pairs, students cut out 4-6 detail strips. They glue the 3 strong legs under the tabletop "Busy Honeybees" and place the "broken legs" (distractor sentences like "Bees are yellow" or "My dog saw a bee") into the "Extra Folder" trashcan icon.
4
ELL Language Supports ELL FOCUS
Ensure all sorting cards contain clear, colorful graphic drawings accompanying the simple sentences. L1 Entering: Point to detail card, thumbs up for strong leg, thumbs down for broken leg. L2 Emerging: Use partner dialogue prompt cards: "This is a strong leg. It talks about bees making honey."

Warm-Up: Detective Handshake & Agreement Chants 10 mins
Introduce the idea of "Co-Detectives." Model a fun high-five/handshake. Teach students the speech words: "I agree!" (nod head, double thumbs up) and "I disagree." (shake head, hands crossed). Practice as a class.
2
Direct Instruction: Modeling with "Ocean Giants" 15 mins
Use Slides Day 4. Model a role-play with an assistant or student: Look at "Blue Whales" text. Teacher points to "Blue Whales are huge" as the tabletop. Ask helper: "What do you think?" Helper responds using partner cards: "I agree. Blue Whales are huge."
3
Collaborative Work: Ocean Giants Cards 20 mins
Distribute Ocean Giants Partner Task Cards . Each partner gets a role (Detective A and Detective B). Detective A uses their speech-bubble frame card to ask a question. Detective B answers by selecting the matching image/sentence detail leg. They swap roles for Card 2 (Orca Whales).
4
ESL Monitoring & Feedback Guide ELL FOCUS

Read the firefighter passage on the Firefighter Case File Worksheet aloud twice as a whole group while students follow along with their fingers. Read slowly, emphasizing repeating terms like firefighter, truck, and help.
3
Assessment: Firefighter Case File Organizer 20 mins
Students complete their assessment sheet independently. They identify the main idea tabletop and supporting details using the matching cutouts or direct handwriting options. Allow entering students to complete the picture match, and emerging students to write simple words.
4
Scoring & ELD Next Steps Rubric ELL FOCUS
Grade based on comprehension, not spelling or grammar. Check if they correctly identified the "tabletop" theme of firefighter helper activities and selected details that match. If a student selected a distractor, pull them for 5 minutes of small-group table metaphor review.
