Do you like donuts? These round, sweet treats are loved by people all over the world. But donuts did not always look or taste the way they do today. The history of the donut is a long and tasty story!
Long ago, Dutch settlers brought a treat called "olykoeks" to America. This name means "oily cakes." These were small balls of dough fried in fat. There was one problem, though. The middle of the dough stayed raw and gooey while the outside was crunchy.
In 1847, a young sailor named Hanson Gregory found a solution. He used a tin pepper box to punch a hole in the center of the dough. This allowed the donut to cook evenly all the way through. No more raw middles!
During World War I, donuts became even more famous. Brave women called "Doughnut Lassies" traveled to Europe. They cooked donuts for soldiers to remind them of home. This made the treat very popular when the soldiers returned to America.
Later, in 1920, a man named Adolph Levitt invented the first donut machine. Before this, people had to make each donut by hand. The machine could make many donuts very quickly. This meant more people could enjoy fresh, warm donuts every day.
Today, donuts come in many shapes and flavors. You can find them with sprinkles, jelly, or even bacon! Even though they have changed over time, they remain one of the world’s favorite snacks.

The clock on the wall struck midnight. Sam rubbed his sleepy eyes and pulled on his white apron. While the rest of the town was tucked into bed, Sam was just starting his work at "The Golden Glaze."
His grandfather, Mr. Miller, was already busy. He was mixing a giant bowl of sweet dough. "Ready for the secret ingredient, Sam?" he whispered with a wink. Sam nodded. He carefully sprinkled a dash of cinnamon into the bowl.
Suddenly, the shop lights flickered and went out! The giant dough mixer stopped with a clank . "Oh no!" Sam cried. "How will we finish the donuts before the sun comes up?"
Mr. Miller sighed. "We will have to do it the old-fashioned way, Sam. We will use our hands." Sam felt a bit nervous . He had never made so many donuts by hand before. But he didn't want to let his grandfather down.
For hours, they worked by candlelight. Sam rolled the dough and his grandfather cut the circles. They laughed and told stories as they worked. Sam realized that making donuts by hand was actually fun!
When the first customer walked in at six o'clock, the shelves were full of warm, perfect donuts. Sam smiled. They had worked hard and saved the day.
