Lesson Overview
This lesson introduces the two fundamental parts of a simple sentence: the Subject (Who) and the Verb (Do) . Using the persona of "Mr. Mix-Up," teachers lead students through identifying logical and illogical pairings.
Activity Steps

The Hook
Introduce Mr. Mix-Up using the slide deck. Explain that he is very silly and thinks animals can do things they can't actually do.

Guided Sorting
Use a pocket chart or magnets on the board. Place one "Who" card. Ask: "Can a fish fly?" When students say no, ask: "What can a fish do?" and find the correct "Do" card.

Partner Practice
Distribute the Mix Up Cards to pairs. One student picks a "Who" and the other must find a matching "Do" that makes sense.
Discussion Prompts

Pro-Tip

Lesson 2
Learning Goal
Students will transition from matching pairs to arranging three distinct words (Article + Noun + Verb) to create a complete oral and visual thought.
The Pocket Chart Routine
Set up a pocket chart with three columns: THE | WHO | DO
1. The Constant
Place "The" in the first slot. Explain that many sentences start with this word to introduce who we are talking about.
2. Choosing the Subject
Invite a student to pick a "Who" card from the deck. Read it together: "The Cat..."
3. Finding the Action
Ask: "What is the cat doing?" Have another student pick a "Do" card. "The Cat Sits."
4. The Final Read
Sweep your finger under the words and have the whole class read the full sentence with a strong "stop" at the end.
Listen For...
• Are students saying "The" or skipping to the noun?
• Can they pause slightly between the Who and the Do?
• Do they use a falling intonation at the end?

Project Goal
To synthesize 5 lessons of verb instruction into a meaningful, community-focused artifact. Students move from isolation (individual work) to collaboration (a shared book).

Pre-Writing (10 min)
Gather students on the rug. Ask: "What is the best thing about recess?" Map their verbs on a whiteboard (Run, Slide, Play, Kick).

The Creation (20 min)
Distribute the Class Book Page Template . Students should draw first to ground their thinking, then use brave phonetic spelling for their verb.

Collect pages. Add a cover page titled "Things We Do." Hole-punch the left side and use yarn or book rings to bind.
