When a low-intensity fire sweeps through the forest, the bark acts like a heat shield, protecting the living wood inside.
Second, their roots are surprisingly shallow, extending only five to ten feet deep. Instead of growing deep down, they stretch out horizontally over one hundred feet. As they spread, they intertwine with the roots of neighboring redwoods, locking together like puzzle pieces. This communal root system holds the entire forest strong against fierce coastal windstorms.
Finally, redwoods rely on the famous California coastal fog. During the dry summer months, redwood leaves collect moisture from the fog, which drips down to the forest floor to water their roots. This "fog drip" provides up to one-third of the trees' annual water supply, allowing them to thrive even when rain is scarce.
