Front Runners

Students discover and decode initial consonant blends including L-blends, R-blends, and S-blends. Through multi-sensory blending routines and orthographic mapping, learners segment and blend sounds at the beginning of words.

Finish Line

Learners explore final consonant blends that anchor the end of words, such as -nd, -mp, -st, -nt, and -ft. Students distinguish ending blends from digraphs and practice stretching and isolating coda phonemes.

Blend Showdown

Students compare, contrast, and combine beginning and ending consonant blends. Learners conquer challenging CCVCC words, sort words by blend location, and demonstrate cumulative mastery.

Drops 2nd beginning consonant (writes "fog" for "frog")Coarticulation blending difficulty; letter 2 swallowed by initial stop consonant."Put your hand to your throat: feel the growl of /r/ right after the /f/ puff."

    3. Multi-Sensory Intervention Menu

    Routine A: Slinky Sound Stretching

Use a physical mini-slinky. Pull it open one coil per phoneme (/c/-/a/-/m/-/p/). Snap it together to blend the whole word ("camp!"). Ensures ending consonants are not omitted.

    Routine B: Color-Coded Magnet Tiles

Assign Blue magnetic tiles for beginning blends, Red tiles for vowels, and Green tiles for ending blends. Have students build CCVCC words physically: [Blue] + [Red] + [Green].

    Recommended Sequence Progression:

Upon mastering beginning, ending, and CCVCC blends, students transition smoothly to 3-letter blends (scr-, spl-, str-) and blends with silent e syllables (stone, plate, drive). Record individual assessment results into the classroom literacy tracker.
