Look-for: Catches linking verb is in #4; isolates verbs from noun objects.

Look-for: Irregular past forms (brought, ran) without overregularizing -ed.

Look-for: Circle = Main verb, Underline = Supporting verb; 3rd-person singular -s.
Warm-Up Key: Sentence Verb Identification
Directions: Underline verbs in each sentence
1. Yesterday, I went to the park. Past Tense
Analysis: Irregular past form of go. Verify students don't underline the prepositional phrase "to the park".
2. Maria loves to eat pizza for dinner. Main + Inf.
Analysis: loves (main verb) and to eat (infinitive). Accept either "loves" or both.
3. Everyday, we have to complete all our homework. Verb Phrase
Analysis: Semi-modal verb phrase: have + infinitive to complete. Prompt: "What action is required?"
4. The verb is usually hard to find. Trap Item
Misconception: Students skip is because it's not a physical action. Remind: "State of being is also a verb!"
5. I always pay attention during English Class. Present
Analysis: Verb is pay (idiomatic: pay attention). Ensure student did not underline adverb "always".
6. During breakfast, students make a lot of noise. Action Verb
Analysis: make is the transitive action verb. Student trap: Underlining "noise" (noun object).

Must insert a contextually valid action verb adhering to grammatical constraints:
- When I am at the park, I like to [play / run / walk].
• Constraint: Base infinitive form following "to".
- During the school day, I [learn / write / read] a lot.
• Constraint: Simple present, 1st person base verb.
- When I am home, I like to [relax / read / rest].
• Constraint: Base infinitive form.
- I am happy when I am [playing / drawing / eating].
• Watch: Requires -ing present participle after "am".

Legend: Circle = Main • Underline = Supporting
1. I am tired of this. Linking Verb
Teacher Note: "am" acts as main linking verb here (tired = adjective). If students underline "am" thinking it is supporting, ask: "Is there another action verb? No, so 'am' is the main verb!"
2. I will check on that for you. Modal + Main
Prompt: Supporting verb = will (future modal). Main action = check. Ask: "What is the physical or mental action?"
3. I would be happy to help. Modal + Copula
Prompt: Supporting verb = would (conditional modal). Main state = be. ("to help" = infinitive).
4. He is trying to get here on time. Aux + Participle
Prompt: Supporting auxiliary = is. Main verb = trying (present continuous action).
