Sound Detectives: Phoneme Segmenting
Focus: Isolating Beginning, Middle, & Ending Sounds in CVC Words
Grade: K–1 Phonics
Duration: 35–45 Mins
Learning Objective
Students will segment spoken 3-phoneme CVC words into initial, medial short vowel, and final phonemes with 80% accuracy.
Materials Needed
Interactive Slide Deck, Sound Box Mats, 3 sound chips/counters per student, dry-erase markers, and student worksheets.
Target Vocabulary
CVC Words: cat, sun, map, bug, pig, top, bed, fin, hop, net.Terms: sound, isolate, segment.
1 Warm-Up & Detective Hook (5 Mins) Slides 1–2
Put on your detective hats! Explain: "Every word is built of mystery sound clues. Today, we are Sound Detectives breaking words into their three secret parts!" Introduce the finger-tap technique: tap thumb-to-index (sound 1), thumb-to-middle (sound 2), thumb-to-ring (sound 3).
2 Teacher Modeling: "I Do" (8 Mins) Slides 3–4
Display picture of CAT . Teacher script: "Watch me find the sounds. First sound is /k/. Middle sound is /a/. Ending sound is /t/. /k/ - /a/ - /t/. Cat!" Push three physical counters into an Elkonin box on the magnetic board one by one while saying each sound clearly.
3 Guided Practice & Movement Break: "We Do" (12 Mins) Slides 5–7
Distribute Sound Box Mats. Model the word SUN together. Students push counters into boxes while chanting: "/s/ ... /u/ ... /n/ ... sun!" Execute the "Robot Tap" Movement Break : stand up, tap shoulders for beginning sound, waist for middle sound, and stomp feet for ending sound.
4 Independent Application & Exit Ticket: "You Do" (15 Mins) Worksheet & Ticket
Students complete the Sound Detectives Practice Worksheet , coloring sound circles and tracing letters in sound boxes. Conclude with the 3-minute Exit Ticket for fast formative evaluation.
Support / Intervention
Use tactile felt pads or pop-it toys instead of chips. Exaggerate continuous sounds (/m/, /s/, /f/) before stop sounds (/t/, /p/, /k/).
Extension / Challenge
Ask students to write the corresponding grapheme (letter) in each sound box after segmenting orally, or substitute ending sounds (cat → can).
