Mitch and his dog, Patch, hiked along a steep ridge. The rocky path led to an old wooden lodge near the edge of the hill. As they crossed a rickety bridge over a muddy ditch, Patch began to scratch at the ground. Mitch had to stretch his neck to see what caught his dog's eye.
Stuck under a prickly hedge was a shiny silver badge! Mitch told Patch to fetch it. Patch had to dodge a puddle so he would not smudge his fur. When Patch returned, Mitch wiped off the damp badge and matched it to the forest ranger emblem.
At the lodge, they met Ranger Judd resting on a stone ledge. Mitch held out the badge with a smile. Ranger Judd was thrilled! He gave Patch a crunchy dog treat and gave Mitch a big slice of sweet fudge for returning the badge.
