The Chalk Art Showdown
Read the story carefully, paying close attention to paragraph numbers.
[1] Maya knelt on the warm blacktop, humming softly as she shaded a giant, swirling ring around Saturn with bright turquoise chalk. Next to her, Sam lined up the orange and purple chalk sticks in a neat row. Their playground mural covered three whole squares of the sidewalk, full of shimmering stars, rocky meteors, and glowing planets. Maya wanted to finish the entire solar system before the recess bell rang.
[2] Suddenly, a heavy red sneaker dragged right across Saturn’s turquoise ring, leaving a messy gray smear. Damon stood over them with his arms crossed tightly across his chest. He was the tallest kid in third grade and had spent the last two weeks stomping around the yard scowling. "Sidewalks are for walking, not baby scribbles," Damon sneered, kicking the box of purple chalk toward the grass.
[3] Sam scrambled backward, pulling his knees to his chest. "Let’s just pack up and go to the swings, Maya," Sam whispered nervously. "Damon ruined Jordan's four-square game yesterday too. He just wants to get people in trouble."
[4] Maya’s chest burned with anger. She had worked on Saturn for fifteen minutes! She opened her mouth to yell, but stopped. She noticed Damon clutching an old deflated basketball under his left elbow. His knuckles were white, and his eyes kept darting toward a laughing group of boys playing kickball near the fence. Nobody had invited Damon over, and he stood completely by himself every single afternoon.
[5] Instead of shouting, Maya stood up and brushed chalk dust off her jeans. She looked directly at Damon. "Why do you always kick things when other kids are having fun?" she asked in a calm, steady voice. "Are you mad at my drawing, or are you just mad that you're bored?"
[6] Damon’s scowl wobbled. His cheeks flushed bright pink. For a second, he looked smaller. "I'm not bored!" he snapped, his voice cracking. "Everybody always starts games without me anyway. You guys think you own the whole blacktop!" He stared at the ground, kicking a pebble with his sneaker.
[7] Maya picked up the longest piece of neon blue chalk from the ground. "We don't own the blacktop," she said quietly. "And I still need someone tall enough to reach the top corner for Neptune's stormy clouds. Do you want to help, or are you just going to stand there holding that flat ball?" Damon blinked in surprise. He dropped the basketball into the grass, rubbed his dusty hand on his shorts, and cautiously took the chalk.
