Suffix Sounds Teacher Guide
UFLI Aligned • Lesson 65
Suffix -ed: The Three Sounds
Concept: Past Tense Morphology & Phonological Rules (/t/, /d/, /ɪd/)
Teacher Guide • 30–40 Min
Lesson Objectives
- Identify suffix -ed as a morpheme signaling an action completed in the past.
- Distinguish and accurately pronounce the 3 phonological variants: /t/, /d/, and /ɪd/.
- Recognize that words ending in t or d gain an additional syllable when adding -ed.
Multisensory Cue
Have students place fingers flat against their vocal cords (throat) to feel vibration (voiced = /d/) versus breath with no buzz (unvoiced = /t/).
Step 1: Phonemic Awareness 3–4 Min
Vocal Cord Awareness Drill: Contrast voiced and unvoiced end sounds.
• "/k/ in walk: buzz or no buzz? (No buzz - unvoiced)"
• "/l/ in yell: buzz or no buzz? (Buzz - voiced)"
• "/t/ in plant: ends in /t/! (Needs an extra beat!)"
Step 2: Visual & Auditory Drill 3 Min
Flash card drill with previously taught phonograms.
Review Cards: sh, ch, th, wh, ck, ng, tch
Affix Review: -s, -es, -ing (Prompt: "What does suffix -ing mean? Happening right now!")
Introduce new suffix card: -ed
Step 3: Direct Instruction — The 3 Sounds of Suffix -ed
8–10 Min
Teach: Suffix -ed attaches to base verbs to show something already happened. Even though it is spelled -ed, our voices pronounce it 3 ways depending on the base word's final sound:
1. Extra Syllable /ɪd/ +1 Syllable
When base word ends with sound /t/ or /d/.
plant → plant-ed (2 syl)
melt → melt-ed (2 syl)
land → land-ed (2 syl)
2. Unvoiced /t/ No Vibration
When base word ends in an unvoiced sound (except /t/).
jump → jump-ed (/t/)
brush → brush-ed (/t/)
ask → ask-ed (/t/)
3. Voiced /d/ Throat Buzzes
When base word ends in a voiced sound (except /d/).
yell → yell-ed (/d/)
buzz → buzz-ed (/d/)
clean → clean-ed (/d/)
Step 4: Blending & Guided Sound Sorting
6–8 Min
Model segmenting the base word first, then blending the suffix: "b-a-k-e" → bake + /t/ = baked.
Bucket 1: /ɪd/ (Extra Syl)
rested, rented, hunted, acted, folded, drifted
Bucket 2: /t/ (Unvoiced)
helped, kicked, fished, puffed, locked, hopped
Bucket 3: /d/ (Voiced)
spilled, buzzed, grabbed, rained, sailed, filled

Application, Dictation & Differentiation
Steps 5–8: Dictation, Decodable Passage & Scaffolding Guidelines
Part 2 of Routine
Step 5: High-Frequency Words
3 Min
Review irregular and high-utility words appearing in today's decodable text:
looked
Base word look (/ʊk/) + -ed (/t/). Note the double 'oo' vowel sound.
could / would
Heart words: silent 'l'. Prompt: "C-O-U-L-D spells could!"
Check for orthographic recall without sounding out letter-by-letter.
Step 6: Dictation Teacher Script
8–10 Min
Protocol: 1. Say word/sentence → 2. Students echo & tap base word → 3. Add -ed → 4. Write & check.
Word 1: camped (/t/ sound; base word: camp)
"We camped near the lake last June."
Word 2: yelled (/d/ sound; base word: yell)
"The coach yelled with joy."
Word 3: rested (/ɪd/ sound; base word ends in /t/ → 2 syllables)
"The tired dog rested on the rug."
Sentence Dictation:
"The fox jumped and rested in the tent."
Remind students: Check capitalization, punctuation, and two past-tense verbs!
Step 7: Decodable Text Routine — "The Grand Campout"
6–8 Min
1. Pre-Reading Word Hunt
Students preview the worksheet story and highlight or underline all words ending in suffix -ed.
2. Choral / Partner Reading
Read passage together chorally for prosody, then whisper read with partner. Emphasize accurate past-tense inflections.
3. Morphological Check
Ask: "Did these actions happen now or yesterday?" Connect suffix form directly to past temporal meaning.
Step 8: Error Correction & Scaffolding Matrix
Scaffolding
Common Error: Spelling with T
Student writes "jumpt" instead of "jumped".
Prompt: "You hear /t/, but what did the person do? Jump! Jump is the base word. What suffix shows it already happened? Write -ed!"
Error: Extra Syllable on All
Student says "help-id" or "play-id".
Prompt: "Does the base word end in /t/ or /d/? No! Only 't' and 'd' words get an extra syllable. Say it fast: /helpt/, /playd/."
Extension & Multilingual
For MLs: Contrast past tense marker in English with native language time words.
Extension: Challenge students to change irregular verbs vs regular -ed verbs in sentences.

Suffix -ed
The Three Sounds of the Past Tense
/ɪd/ /t/ /d/
Put on your detective hat: One spelling, three different sounds! Slide 1
Concept Meaning Slide 2
What does suffix -ed mean?
Adding -ed to a verb means the action already happened in the past.
Present (Right Now)
I jump
Past (Yesterday)
I jumped
Remember: The spelling is always -ed, but listen closely to how it sounds!
Rule Number 1 Slide 3
Adds an Extra Syllable!
When base words end in t or d → /ɪd/
Our mouths need an extra vowel beat to say the ending!
plant →
plant•ed
2 Syllables
melt →
melt•ed
2 Syllables
land →
land•ed
2 Syllables
Clap the beats: plant-ed (2 claps), melt-ed (2 claps)!
Rule Number 2 Slide 4
No Extra Syllable • Quiet Throat
After Unvoiced Sounds → /t/
Touch your throat! If your vocal cords don't buzz at the end, -ed sounds like /t/.
jump →
jumped
Sounds like /t/
brush →
brushed
Sounds like /t/
pack →
packed
Sounds like /t/
Watch out! We write -ed even when our ears hear /t/!
Rule Number 3 Slide 5
No Extra Syllable • Vocal Cords Buzz
After Voiced Sounds → /d/
Touch your throat! If your vocal cords vibrate, suffix -ed sounds like /d/.
play →
played
Sounds like /d/
yell →
yelled
Sounds like /d/
clean →
cleaned
Sounds like /d/
Feel the buzz in your throat on played, yelled, and cleaned!
