The Spooky Hayride
Lexile: Grade 2+
It was a chilly autumn day as Kate put on her velvet cape. Silver paint sparkled on her mask. She waited by the iron gate for the festival to start. Her older brother Jake made a giant paper ghost to hang above the porch. In the garden, a clever squirrel buried a fallen acorn beneath crisp orange leaves.
As twilight turned the sky into a soft gray, music began to play. "Let's take the winding trail into the fields!" cheered Jake. They hopped aboard a wooden wagon piled high with golden hay. Giant cornstalks began to sway like friendly monsters dancing in the breeze. A tiny baby bat fluttered overhead, but Kate was not afraid. When their wagon reached the grand pumpkin maze, a smiling lady gave them cider and roasted pumpkin seeds. It was truly a magical evening!
