Get your whiteboards or detective journals ready! Let's Begin
PART 1
Quick Check: The 1-1-1 Doubling Rule
Suffix Check
When do we double the final consonant before -ing or -est?
1
1 Syllable
Short base word
1
1 Short Vowel
Says /ă/, /ĕ/, /ĭ/, /ŏ/, /ŭ/
1
1 Final Consonant
Just one consonant at the end
All 3 YES? → DOUBLE the consonant before adding -ing or -est!
Adding -ing
run + ing → running
Double the N!
Adding -est
big + est → biggest
Double the G!
YOUR TURN
Quick Check: Double or Do Not Double?
Test the 1-1-1 Rule!
Word #1 1-1-1 Match!
hop + ing → hopping
YES! 1 syllable, 1 short /ŏ/, 1 consonant (p).
Word #2 (Look closely!) Watch Out!
jump + ing → jumping
NO! Ends in two consonants (m + p). Don't double!
Word #3 1-1-1 Match!
hot + est → hottest
YES! 1 syllable, 1 short /ŏ/, 1 consonant (t).
Word #4 (Look closely!) Watch Out!

Detective Tip: Always count the consonants at the end before adding your suffix!
PART 2
The Silent Partners: KN & GN
Silent Letter Digraphs
When K meets N or G meets N...
The K and G are SILENT!
Both letter teams make only one sound: /n/
KN = /n/ Silent K
The K takes a nap! Do not say the /k/ sound!
knee
knot
knight
knock
GN = /n/ Silent G
The G stays quiet! You only hear the N!
gnat
gnaw
gnome
sign
Memory Clue: When K or G hugs N, only N speaks up again!
PRACTICE
Read Aloud: Silent KN & GN Sentences
Say the /n/ Sound!
1
The brave knight had a scrape on his knee.
Detective check: knight sounds like "nite" • knee sounds like "nee"
2
A tiny gnat began to gnaw on the garden post.
Detective check: gnat sounds like "nat" • gnaw sounds like "naw"
3
Did you know there was a STOP sign near the gate?
Detective check: know sounds like "no" • sign sounds like "sine"
Never say "k-night" or "g-nat"! Keep K and G completely quiet!
PART 3
The Wild Vowel Rule Breakers!
Closed Syllable Exceptions
Normal Phonics Rule: Vowel followed by 2 consonants is usually SHORT
Example: h-o-p = /ŏ/ (short) • f-i-l-l = /ĭ/ (short)
BUT WAIT!
When OLD and ILD show up, the vowels go WILD!
-OLD = LONG O /ō/ sound
The letter O says its own name (like in go)!
cold gold hold fold
-ILD = LONG I /ī/ sound
The letter I says its own name (like in ice)!
wild child mild
Remember: "A wild child in the cold holds gold!" (Both -ILD and -OLD have long vowels!)
