Early on Saturday morning, golden sunshine streamed across the kitchen table. Gabe, an athlete who ran track for his school, tied on a bright red apron. He and his sister Jade wanted to invite their neighbors over for breakfast. They decided to make a fresh batch of tall pancakes.
"Let's explore grandmother's cookbook," Jade said with enthusiasm. "She taught us how to make homemade batter without making a single mistake." Jade checked the pantry shelf to include pure vanilla, a dash of cinnamon, and fresh blueberries.
While Gabe whisked the eggs, Duke, their frisky puppy, began to bark and tried to escape through the back screen door. Jade quickly shut the wooden gate so Duke would stay safe inside. Gabe poured generous scoops of batter onto the hot griddle until tiny bubbles formed. The sweet, warm aroma began to fill the entire home.
Suddenly, their neighbor Mr. Cole knocked on the door. He was carrying his shiny brass trombone home from the parade band practice. "What a wonderful surprise!" Mr. Cole said, sniffing the air. Gabe and Jade concluded that sharing breakfast with friends was the absolute best way to start the weekend.
