Why Our Oceans Are Important

Why should the ocean interest you? Maybe you have been to the 12
beaches along Ocean Ave. Perhaps you went swimming in the ocean, 24
built a sandcastle, or got a sunburn. The ocean is more than just a 38
place to go and have some fun. All life on Earth depends on 50
our oceans. 52
According to Mr. Allen, my science teacher, more than two 62
thirds of Earth’s surface is covered by oceans. The distance across the 74
Pacific Ocean alone is about 9,600 miles! The oceans provide space 85
for many of Earth’s plants and animals to live. Over 17,000 species of 97
saltwater animals live in the ocean. 104
You are probably familiar with ocean plants, such as seaweed, 114
and animals, such as seals, sharks, and jellyfish. But did you also 126
know that there is life in just one drop of ocean water? The ocean is 140
home to billions of tiny life forms. They cannot be seen by the human 154
eye. One of these life forms is called plankton. It helps to create much 168
of the oxygen we breathe. It is also an important part of the food 182
chain. Fish, whales, and other sea creatures eat plankton. The seafood 194
humans get from the ocean depends on plankton, too. If the ocean 206
gets too polluted, some of the plankton could die off. With less 218
plankton, there could also be less oxygen and fewer ocean animals. 229
