Interactive Whiteboard Word Chain: Hard G, Soft G, and -dge Spelling Patterns
Teacher Reference Card
Hard G /g/
Produced before vowels a, o, u or at the end of a syllable.
Examples: gag, bug, got.
Soft G /j/
Often produced before vowels e, i, y. Uses a silent e at the end of long vowel syllables.
Examples: page, huge.
The -dge Rule /j/
Used immediately after a single short vowel at the end of a one-syllable word.
Examples: badge, ridge.
Whiteboard Tip
Write the target letters that change in a different color (e.g., red or blue marker). Have students tap their desk when the 'g' sound changes from hard /g/ (throat vibration) to soft /j/ (mouth blow).
