The Clay Whistle
By Maya Linwood
[1] For the first three weeks at Oak Creek Middle, Mateo moved like an island. In the hallways, his eyes stayed locked on the scuffed linoleum tiles, and in classes, his jacket remained zipped to his chin. Whenever someone tried to start a conversation, Mateo gave polite, one-word replies that ended the exchange instantly. He had convinced himself that keeping people at a distance was safer than trusting someone and being let down.
[2] That strategy crumbled on Tuesday when Mr. Alvarez paired him with Priya for a ceramics unit. Priya was a whirlwind of messy apron strings, energetic questions, and paint-splattered sneakers. "Our goal is a twin pair of Andean whistle flutes," she announced, placing a cold, wet gray lump of earthenware between them. Mateo frowned and pulled his stool back. "I'm not artistic. Just tell me what to do so we don't fail."
[3] Instead of getting frustrated, Priya laughed gently. "Nobody is born knowing how to shape clay, Mateo. It just takes patience." When Mateo tried hollowing his flute, his thumbs pressed too hard, causing the clay walls to collapse into a cracked ruin. Mateo froze, his ears burning with embarrassment. He expected the usual eye-roll or sarcastic comment he'd heard at his previous school.
[4] Instead, Priya picked up a sponge, dipped it in water, and passed it to him. "Mistakes in clay are great," she said simply. "Water lets you rewrite anything. Here, hold the base while I smooth the ridge." She didn't take over; she partnered with him. For the next twenty minutes, Priya patiently guided Mateo's hands, sharing funny stories about her own clumsy art projects until Mateo found himself doing something he hadn't done all month: laughing out loud.
[5] By Friday, their finished whistle produced a clear, melodic birdcall. More importantly, Mateo felt something shift inside his chest. Later that afternoon in the cafeteria, he spotted Marcus—a quiet new student who had arrived only yesterday—sitting alone, nervously opening a lunchbox. Two weeks ago, Mateo would have looked away. Instead, he grabbed his tray, unzipped his heavy jacket, and took a seat across from Marcus. "Hey," Mateo smiled. "Is this seat taken?"
