Reading Mission Checklist
1. Find the central idea (what the whole text teaches).
2. Use clue words around bold words to figure out what they mean.
3. Underline text evidence that shows how science keeps athletes safe.
[1] Long ago, sports gear looked very different from today. Football players wore thin leather caps. Basketball players ran in stiff canvas shoes. Tennis champions played with heavy wooden rackets. Over time, science began to revolutionize sports, which means to change them completely. Today, engineers study how human bodies move. They build new gear to help athletes run faster, jump higher, and stay safe from bad injuries.
[2] Sneakers are one of the biggest inventions in modern sports. Old running shoes were flat and hard. When a runner landed, the hard ground hurt their knees and ankles. Today, sneakers use thick foam cushions. Tiny gas bubbles inside the soles soften every landing. In addition, rubber treads give shoes strong traction . Traction is the grip between a shoe and the floor that stops players from slipping when they make fast cuts.
[3] In contact sports like football and hockey, keeping the head safe is very important. Old leather caps could not protect players during hard collisions. Modern helmets have layers of soft foam and tough outer shells. These shells are made from resilient materials. Resilient means strong materials that can take hard hits over and over without cracking. The helmet spreads out the hit so the brain stays safe from injury.
[4] Technology also helps referees make the right calls. In tennis and soccer, high-speed cameras track the ball. These cameras have incredible precision , which means exact accuracy. They show if a ball was in bounds or out by just one millimeter. In addition, players wear smart vests with trackers. These tools warn coaches when a player is too tired, helping them rest before getting hurt.
[5] Hard work and practice will always be the secret to winning games. But science gives athletes a big boost. With better shoes, safer helmets, and smart cameras, players can reach their full potential . That means they can perform at their very best while staying safe on the field.
Target Words: revolutionize • traction • resilient • precision • potential

Passage: Game Changers (600L)
1 Central Idea & Supporting Details
A. What is the central idea of the entire passage?
Old sports gear made of leather was stronger than gear today. Science and technology have changed sports gear to help athletes play better and stay safe. Tennis rackets are the most dangerous equipment in sports. Cameras have completely replaced human coaches and referees.
B. Write one sentence from Paragraph 3 that proves modern helmets protect players' heads from hard hits:
"..."

Citing Strong Details (600L)
Task 1: Color-Code the R.A.C.E. Mentor Model
🟡 Yellow: Claim 🔵 Blue: Evidence Quote 🟢 Green: Explain
Read this model answer. Use three highlighters to color-code each part of the R.A.C.E. strategy:
[Sentence 1] Modern running shoes protect an athlete's joints from painful injuries.
[Sentence 2] According to Paragraph 2, the text states, "Tiny gas bubbles inside the soles soften every landing."
[Sentence 3] This proves that sneaker science cushions runners' feet so their knees do not absorb hard ground shocks.
Task 2: Color-Match Claims to Evidence
Use 3 different colored pencils
Choose 3 colors (e.g., Red, Blue, Green). Shade or circle each Claim and its matching Text Evidence in the same color !
Author's Claim
Claim A: Old sneakers hurt runners when they landed on the ground.
Claim B: Modern helmets can survive repeated collisions without breaking.
Claim C: Cameras can tell if a ball was in bounds by a tiny amount.
Matching Direct Evidence Sentence
Proof 1: "Resilient means strong materials that can take hard hits over and over without cracking."
Proof 2: "When a runner landed, the hard ground hurt their knees and ankles."
Proof 3: "They show if a ball was in bounds or out by just one millimeter."
Task 3: Color-Guided Evidence Writing
Prompt: Why are modern helmets safer than old leather caps? Write in the 3 color-coded zones:

Text Evidence
1
Target 1: Central Idea
The Big Picture
The Simple Formula
Topic + Author's Big Point = Central Idea
Topic: Sports science and gear.
Big Point: New gear helps athletes play better and protects them from injury.
Detective Tips
Check Paragraph 1 and 5 for the main message.
Make sure your answer covers shoes, helmets, AND cameras!
Do not pick a small detail like "wooden tennis rackets."
Ask yourself: "What is the main lesson the author wants me to learn?"
2
Target 2: Cracking Context Clues
Word Detective
Look for Signal Words
"which means..." — Explains the word directly.
"is..." or "are..." — Tells you what the word is.
Examples: Tells how the object or gear works.
600L Passage Example
"Traction is the grip between a shoe and the floor that stops players from slipping..."
Clue: The word "is" introduces the exact definition!
Meaning: Grip that stops slipping.
Always read the sentence right after the bold word to spot the clue!
3
Target 3: Citing Text Evidence
Prove It!
The R.A.C.E. Strategy
Restate the question in your opening line.
Answer the question in your own words.
Cite evidence: Copy words with quotation marks.
Explain: Tell why this evidence matters.
Sentence Starters to Use
"According to Paragraph #, the text states..."
"In the passage, the author writes that '...'"
"This proves my answer because..."
Always use quotation marks ("...") when copying words directly from the text!
Guided Model: Paragraph 2
Read Together
[2] "In addition, rubber treads give shoes strong traction. Traction is the grip between a shoe and the floor that stops players from slipping when they make fast cuts."
Context Clue Found:
"Traction is the grip between a shoe and the floor..." gives the meaning right away.
Text Evidence Proof:
"...stops players from slipping when they make fast cuts" proves how it protects players.
See how one sentence gives both the definition and the proof!

Common Misconceptions & Fixes
Misconception: Highlighting Entire Paragraphs. Students may color too much text. Fix: Teach students to "laser-target" only the author's exact proof sentence.
Misconception: Skipping the Green Zone (Explanation). Students stop after quoting evidence. Fix: Remind them that the Green Zone answers "So what? Why does this prove the claim?"
