Reading Passage: Mud, Motors, and Motion
Read carefully before answering
Dirt bikes are light motorcycles built to ride on rough ground like mud, sand, and gravel. Unlike street bikes, they have deep knobby tires that bite into loose dirt to give the rider traction, which stops the bike from sliding. Strong springs called suspension soak up heavy bumps and jumps so the bike stays stable. Riders use a twist throttle on the handlebar to speed up, and hand and foot levers to brake safely.
Riding a dirt bike takes balance, focus, and strength. On bumpy trails, riders stand up on the foot pegs and bend their knees like shock absorbers. When turning around sharp curves, riders lean the motorcycle down while keeping their own body upright. Safety is always the first rule of riding. Every rider must wear a secure helmet, eye goggles, tough boots, and padded chest armor before starting the engine.
Many riders love to race in an exciting sport called motocross. Racers speed through closed dirt circuits packed with steep hills, banked turns called berms, and mud pits. While winning is fun, true motocross athletes practice fair play, respect fellow riders, and always maintain their machines.
Traction: Grip on the ground that stops tires from sliding.
Suspension: Springs that absorb shocks and rough bumps.
Throttle: Handlebar grip that controls engine speed.
