The Light at Cape Mist
By E. M. Vance
Ten-year-old Nora stood at the Cape Mist Lighthouse during a fierce storm. Her grandfather Silas, the lighthouse keeper, was stuck across the bay. Down below, sharp rocks hid beneath crashing waves. Suddenly, the lighthouse gears screeched, and the spinning light went completely dark! Through the thick fog, Nora heard the warning horn of a passenger ship, The Wanderer. The storm wind was blowing the ship straight toward the rocks, and it would crash in twenty minutes.
Nora raced up the stairs to the light room and found a rope jammed in the gears. Remembering her grandfather’s rule—“A lighthouse keeper never panics; every machine has a voice if you listen”—she knew running to town for help would take too long. Nora wedged an iron tool into the stuck gears and pushed with all her strength until they snapped free! She turned the heavy wheel, and the bright light swept over the sea. The ship saw the beam just in time, turned away from the rocks, and blasted its horn in relief.
