Instructional Procedure
1
The Time Machine Hook (10 mins)
Tell students they are "Time Travelers." Present three sentences: "I went to Mars," "I am on Mars," "I will go to Mars." Ask: How does the verb change the 'where' and 'when'? Discuss the concept of verb tenses as the settings on a time machine.
2
Direct Instruction: Mapping the Timeline (20 mins)
Distribute or display the Time Travelers Anchor Chart . Focus on the distinction between Simple (actions as a whole) and Continuous (actions in progress). Introduce the Future Perfect (by a certain time, it's done) and Future Continuous (action will be ongoing).
3
Guided Practice: Tense Tussle (20 mins)
Work through the first section of the Tense Tussle Worksheet together. Pay close attention to irregular verbs like catch → caught and write → wrote . Practice identifying "shifts" in paragraphs where the writer accidentally changes from past to present.
4
Independent Check (15 mins)
Students complete the remaining sections of the worksheet independently. Use the Chrono-Check Quiz as an exit ticket or final assessment.
