Common Failure: Over-Regularization
Students often add -ed to irregular verbs (e.g., "runned" instead of "ran" , "writed" instead of "wrote" ).
Repair: Chart irregular groupings. Teach auditory checks (e.g., "Sing, sang, sung" matching "Ring, rang, rung").
Common Failure: Orphaned Participles
Students use past participles without their helping verbs (e.g., "She gone home" instead of "She had gone home" ).
Repair: Implement the "Double-Clutch" Rule : "A participle (gone, done) cannot run solo. It must have a helper in the cylinder!"
Differentiation & Scaffolding Pit Stops
🔧 Struggling Learners / ML Students: Use sensory manipulatives. Cut verb-helper cards (e.g., card "have" + card "driven") and have them physically snap the helper to the past participle. If the participle is paired without a helper, show them the empty slot on the table.

The "Double-Clutch" Rule
Some past tense verbs run fine completely on their own—we call this the Simple Past (e.g., "I wrote the report" ). But when you add a helping verb (has, have, had), you must "double-clutch" and shift the verb to its heavy-duty form, the Past Participle !
